ROLLA, Mo. – A tightly contested Great Lakes Valley Conference contest went in Missouri S&T's favor Friday night, as
Bertram Gjelfort's (Frederiksberg, Denmark/Falkonergaarden) second half goal gave the Miners a 2-1 win over Truman State at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
Gjelfort scored in the 70
th minute to break a one-all tie to give the Miners their second straight victory and bring them to the .500 mark both overall (5-5-2) and in conference play (4-4-2) in a matchup of two teams battling to earn a spot in the GLVC Tournament.
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) got the ball away from a Truman defender and fed it to Gjelfort, who proceeded to blast a shot into the corner of the net past Truman goalkeeper Julian Echeverri. The S&T defense took care of matters from that point, holding the Bulldogs to just four shots in the second half of play.
S&T took the initial lead in the game in the seventh minute, as
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) got to a ball in front of the net after it had deflected off a Truman defender and hit his shot off the post, but the ball rolled across the crease before going over the goal line.
The Miners had another golden chance in the 34
th minute when Gjelfort got loose down the middle of the field and had his shot stopped by Echeverri, then
Joe Mueller (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central HS) hit a shot on the rebound wide of the net. Truman (5-6-1, 4-5-1 GLVC) tied the game in the 43
rd minute when Ryan Stites scored on a free kick.
S&T had a 16-7 advantage in shots in the contest and had five shots on net to Truman's two.
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) made one save in goal for the Miners.
Missouri S&T will wrap up its 2019 home schedule on Sunday when it hosts Quincy at 2:30 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
