Overtime goal sends Miners to defeat at hands of Quincy

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team missed an opportunity to create some space between itself and the other contenders in the Great Lakes Valley Conference playoff race Sunday, as Quincy – one of the teams pursuing S&T – pulled out a 2-1 win in double overtime at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Joel McIlroy headed in a ball in front of the net in the 106th minute shortly after a free kick to give the Hawks (7-6, 5-5 GLVC) the victory in a tightly-contested game.

Following a scoreless first half, one in which the teams held an equal amount of possession, the Hawks broke the ice in the 74th minute when Aubrey Reis hit a shot past S&T goalkeeper Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville).  Just over a minute later, however, the Miners (5-6-2, 4-5-2 GLVC) tied the game after being awarded a penalty kick that Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) converted.

The game remained tied after 90 minutes, then both teams had great scoring opportunities in overtime.  Late in the first overtime period, Quincy's Anthony Christiante got free on a breakaway but Posey came out of the net and was able to knock the ball off Christiante's foot to prevent a shot attempt.

Early in the second overtime, S&T's Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) got a great scoring chance in front of the net, but was turned away by Hawk goalie Adam Whybrow. About four minutes later, McIlroy got a feed in front from Reis and headed in the game-winning goal.

Quincy had a 16-11 advantage in shots in the contest and had nine shots on net to six for S&T.  Posey finished with seven saves on the afternoon.

Sunday's game was the home finale for the Miners in the 2019 season, as they will head to the road for their final four regular season games.  The first of them comes on Friday against Indianapolis at 7:30 p.m. (Eastern time).
