INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team got an early advantage Friday night in its Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup against Indianapolis, but the Greyhounds came away with an 2-1 overtime victory as Javier Steinwascher converted a penalty kick midway through the first extra period.
UIndy (10-3-1, 8-3-1 GLVC) was awarded the penalty after one of its players was taken down in the box and Steinwascher put the penalty kick into the lower right corner to end the contest.
The Miners (5-8-2, 4-7-2 GLVC) got on the scoreboard first in the 10
th minute of play when the Greyhounds were unable to get a ball cleared, as it went right to
Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) and he dribbled past one player and hit a shot by goalkeeper Drew Mueller to provide S&T the lead.
S&T held onto that advantage until the 34
th minute when Alejandro Steinwascher tied the game on a head ball that was ruled to have crossed the goal line before the Miners were able to clear it away. Neither team was able to tally a goal over the next 60-plus minutes of play until UIndy got the penalty kick it won the game with in the 96
th minute.
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) finished with six saves in goal for the Miners, who outshot the Greyhounds 9-8 in shots on net but were outshot 20-15 overall.
The Miners will remain on the road and take on 10
th-ranked Bellarmine Sunday at 2:30 p.m. (Eastern time) in Louisville, Ky. The Knights are unbeaten in their last 23 games following a 1-1 tie Friday against Maryville.
