Miners end shutout drought by blanking Prairie Stars

ROLLA, Mo. – A second half goal by Bertram Gjelfort (Frederiksberg, Denmark/Falkonergaarden) turned out to be the difference as Missouri S&T's men's soccer team recorded its first shutout in over two years Friday night, downing Illinois Springfield 1-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

The Miners (3-3, 2-2 GLVC) controlled play for much of a scoreless first half, outshooting the Prairie Stars 8-1 and getting the only three shots in the first 45 minutes on net.  S&T had a couple of good scoring chances late in the half, but Bertram Gjelfort (Frederiksberg, Denmark/Falkonergaarden) had a shot from the top of the box turned away by UIS goalkeeper Pijus Petkevicius and Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) hit a one just over the top of the net in the waning minutes of the half.

S&T then broke on top in the 51st minute, moments after goalkeeper Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) had made a sprawling save on a shot by UIS' Darien Turner.  Posey's subsequent punt down the field was run down by Gjelfort, who one-timed it past Petkevicius to put the Miners into the lead.

The Miners were able to keep the Prairie Stars (3-3-1, 1-2-1 GLVC) at bay over the final minutes, as UIS had only the one shot on net that preceded the S&T goal; the Miners had a 14-5 advantage in shots on the night.

The shutout was the first for S&T since Sept. 24, 2017 – when the Miners blanked Truman State 2-0 – ending a string of 31 consecutive games with posting a shutout.

S&T will continue its four-game homestand Sunday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium when it hosts Lewis at 2:30 p.m.  The Flyers suffered their first loss of the season Friday when they fell 1-0 to sixth-ranked Maryville in St. Louis.
