SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – After a wild first half that saw Missouri S&T and Drury combine for six goals, it was the host Panthers who came up with the decisive tally in the second half to come away with a 4-3 win over S&T Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer action.
Jamie O'Brien's penalty kick goal in the 80
th minute broke a three-all tie and gave the Panthers (4-2, 2-1 GLVC) the victory over the Miners (2-3, 1-2 GLVC) on a rainy afternoon at Harrison Stadium.
The Miners got on the scoreboard first when
Trey Haman (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis University HS) scored for the second straight game as he got to a ball in front of the net and put it past Panther goalkeeper Yannick Lamers in the fifth minute of play.
Drury responded with two goals in a span of just over two minutes to take a 2-1 lead, but the Miners'
Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead) knotted the score with a goal in the 37
th minute of play when he got to a deflected corner kick and put the ball into the lower right corner of the net.
After Ian Conger gave Drury the lead back with under two minutes to play in the opening half, Cairns scored again in the final minute before halftime to tie the contest again. Cairns headed in a cross from
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) to even the score at three as the contest reached the break.
The game remained tied in the second half until O'Brien got the penalty kick opportunity after the Miners were called for a foul in the box on a free kick; O'Brien converted the chance to give the Panthers what turned out to be the decisive goal.
Drury outshot the Miners 18-6 for the game, as S&T goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) finished with three saves. The Miners had six corner kick opportunities, including a pair after the Panthers scored the go-ahead goal.
