ROLLA, Mo. – Thus far in the 2019 season, Missouri S&T's football team has turned Allgood-Bailey Stadium into its own little funhouse by posting another impressive victory Saturday night, as the Miners defeated Miles 49-21 for their second win in as many games on their home turf.
Including its 51-17 win over Azusa Pacific in its home opener last week, S&T has scored 100 points in its first two home games against defending conference champions. And as was the case a week ago, the Miners got contributions from across the board in Saturday's victory.
After both teams failed to score on their opening possession, the Golden Bears (2-1) took the initial lead in the contest on a two-yard scoring run by Donte Edwards midway through the first quarter. However, that was a short-lived lead as the Miners (2-1) tied the score two plays into their next possession when
Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) connected with
Josh Brown (Gainesville, FL/North Marion HS) for a 58-yard touchdown pass, as Brown weaved through defenders after making the catch and then outran the Miles defense to the end zone.
The Miners were then able to take advantage of a six-yard punt that gave them the ball at their own 42 and drove 58 yards to take the lead.
Aaron Moya (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) – who ran for 73 of the Miners' 181 yards in the contest – did the bulk of the work on the drive as he accounted for 28 of the yards to set up an eventual one-yard scoring run by Simms with just over a minute left in the quarter.
S&T extended its lead early in the second quarter on a 20-yard scoring pass from Simms to
Logan Armontrout (Centralia, MO/Centralia), then after missing a couple of chances to add to the advantage, got another score before halftime when Simms and Armontrout hooked up again on a 24-yard scoring pass to give the Miners 28-7 lead at the break.
Miles cut into the margin on a 16-yard scoring pass from Daniel Smith to LaAnthony Robin, but as was the case after each of the Golden Bear touchdowns on Saturday, the Miners answered right back. S&T went on a 75-yard drive that culminated in Simms' second rushing touchdown of the night as he reached over the goal line for the score, then the defense got in on the act when linebacker
Stefan Camplin (Raytown, MO/Raytown) picked off a Smith pass and returned down the sideline 79 yards for a touchdown.
S&T's last score of the night – on the heels of Miles' third touchdown – came on Simms' third scoring pass of the night to Armontrout that covered six yards in the early stages of the fourth quarter.
Simms completed 24-of-32 passes for 268 yards and a career-high four touchdowns; including his two scoring runs, he has now accounted for 13 touchdowns in S&T's first three games of the season. Meanwhile, Armontrout's three scoring catches moved into seventh place on the Miners' all-time list for touchdown receptions with 17 as he also cleared the 100-reception mark for his career.
The Miners finished with 495 yards of total offense while holding the Golden Bears to 383 on the night. Miles had entered the game allowing a total of five net rushing yards in the first two weeks, but the Miners recorded 181 on the ground Saturday.
Camplin led the Miners with eight tackles in the contest to go along with his interception return for the score; two of his stops were also made behind the line of scrimmage as S&T had six tackles for a loss in the game. The Miners also forced six fumbles – recovering two of them – and broke up five passes in the secondary.
The 100 points scored by S&T in its first two home games this season are the most since 2012 and the 128 scored on the year are the most ever scored by a Miner team in the first three weeks of a season.
Missouri S&T will open its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule next Saturday when it faces William Jewell in a 5 p.m. contest in Liberty, Mo. The Cardinals opened their GLVC slate Saturday with a 28-16 loss at Lindenwood.
