LIBERTY, Mo. – A weather delay of nearly 22 hours did not derail Missouri S&T Sunday afternoon, as the Miners won their third straight game by taking down William Jewell in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener by a count of 41-24.
The game – which had started on Saturday and was suspended just eight minutes of actual time after the opening kickoff – was resumed Sunday and the Miners (3-1, 1-0 GLVC) immediately forced a turnover that got them on the scoreboard first.
S&T's opening drive Saturday had ended with an interception deep in Cardinal territory just before the game was stopped, but on Jewell's third snap after play resumed,
Vidal Daniels (Oakland, CA/Mountain Pointe) intercepted a Will Schneider pass at the eight-yard line to set up a historic three-yard touchdown run by
Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central).
Jones' touchdown run was his 30
th rushing touchdown at S&T, breaking a long-standing record that was held by Terry Ryan and the senior running back would be heard from again before the first half ended.
The Cardinals (1-3, 0-2 GLVC) answered the Jones touchdown when Schneider hit TJ Guillory on a 45-yard scoring pass, but S&T took the lead back for good when Jones caught a
Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) pass in the flat and took it 32 yards for a score.
William Jewell moved right back down the field, but
Stefan Camplin (Raytown, MO/Raytown) broke up a pass at the goal line on third down to force the Cardinals to settle for a 34-yard field goal from Dalton Dye to cut the S&T lead to 14-10. The Miners turned the ball over on the first play after getting the ball back, but Jewell attempted a fake field goal that was snuffed out by S&T to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard.
Later in the first half, the Miners forced another turnover – an interception by
Bryce Stevenson (Pearland, TX/Dawson) – to set up another scoring drive that culminated with a 40-yard scoring pass from Simms to
Josh Brown (Gainesville, FL/North Marion HS) with 2:03 left in the half. The Cardinals got into scoring position after getting the ball back thanks to a 46-yard pass to Jalik Jaggwe, but
Ryan Kirkendall (Silsbee, TX/Silsbee) blocked a Dye field goal try to give S&T one more possession before halftime.
S&T proceeded to go 80 yards in just 57 seconds, as Simms utilized wideout
Logan Armontrout (Centralia, MO/Centralia) four times for 63 of the yards to reach the six-yard line with six seconds left. The Miners decided to take one shot at the end zone and succeeded as
Payton McAlister (Decatur, TX/Decatur) caught a scoring pass to give S&T 28-10 lead at the break.
William Jewell got a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, but the Miners responded with a 66-yard scoring drive that ended with Jones' third touchdown of the contest, as he covered the last 20 yards of the drive and scored from seven yards out. On that drive, Simms completed a key third-and-15 pass to
Breon Michel (Colorado Springs, CO/Vista Ridge) for 22 yards to keep the drive going and S&T scored six plays after that.
The Miners got their last score right before the third quarter ended when
Aaron Moya (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) rumbled 29 yards for a score as S&T had 436 yards of total offense on the afternoon.
Simms threw for a career-best 296 yards in the game with the three touchdown throws, as he connected on 21-of-30 in the passing department. Brown caught seven passes for 76 yards, while Armontrout had 121 yards on his six receptions.
S&T's defense allowed 417 yards through the air, but forced four turnovers and also had the blocked kick to keep the Cardinals at bay.
Zach Gallina (Vista, CA/Rancho Buena Vista) also had an interception and
Justin Onwugbufor (Maize, KS/Northwest) had a fumble recovery for S&T, who got six tackles apiece from Stevenson,
Tershawn Wharton (University City, MO/University City) – including two for a loss – and
Skylar Sappington (Brentwood, MO/Brentwood).
Missouri S&T returns to Allgood-Bailey Stadium Saturday for Homecoming, as it will host Quincy (2-2, 0-1 GLVC) in a 1 p.m. contest. The Hawks lost Saturday to Truman State in their GLVC opener.
