ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team used a three-goal outburst in the first half to take control of its Great Lakes Valley Conference contest with Southwest Baptist Friday night at Allgood-Bailey Stadium and went on to record a 4-2 win over the Bearcats that evened its record on the season.
The Miners (2-2, 1-1 GLVC) got first half goals from
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria),
Nicholas Sikora (Highland, IL/Highland) and
Trey Haman (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis University HS) to overcome an early Bearcat goal, then got a second half tally from
Joe Mueller (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central HS) after SBU had drawn to within a goal with under 15 minutes left in regulation time.
SBU (0-4, 0-2 GLVC), who had scored six times in its three previous games this season that all ended in defeat, got on the scoreboard in the ninth minute of play when Alan Aviles redirected a pass from Kevin Zavala past Miner goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville). That lead, however, was short-lived as the Miners answered back nearly three minutes later when Jorgensen got to a ball in a scramble in front of the net following a corner kick and got a shot past SBU's Will vanHoornbeek to tie the score.
Two minutes after that, the Miners scored again when Sikora headed in a free kick from
Josh Wobbe (Collinsville, IL/Collinsville) to put S&T in the lead.
As the first half progressed, the Miners started getting more of the run of play and later turned that momentum into their third goal of the half, as Haman got a ball that was rolling in front of the goal line and pushed it across to give S&T its 3-1 halftime advantage.
The Bearcats got to within a goal on an own goal in the 77
th minute, but moments after Jorgensen had hit the crossbar and SBU was unable to clear the ball out, Mueller ripped a shot into the upper left corner to give the Miners a key insurance goal.
S&T outshot the Bearcats 22-6 in the contest and the four goals were the most scored by the Miners in a game since the 2017 regular season finale against Wisconsin-Parkside.
The Miners return to action Sunday when they face Drury in a 2:30 p.m. contest in Springfield, Mo. The Panthers have lost two straight after a three-game winning streak to start the season, which included a 2-0 loss Friday afternoon at Maryville.
