Women's Soccer Falls to Saints in Opening GLVC Match

ST. LOUIS, MO- The Miners faced a tough challenge today as they opened GLVC play against the Saints of Maryville University. Two early goals from MU would hold off S&T as they dropped the match 2-0.

Maryville gained an early lead after Alex Johnson found Amanda Kaltwasser in the box on a cross less than three minutes into the first half.

S&T challenged the Saints goalkeeper, Alison Riddle, firing off five shots in the first half, three of them on-goal and all in less than two minutes.

Kayla Foster (Sand Springs, Okla./Charles Page) sent a shot in low that was stopped by Riddle and resulted in a Miner corner kick. Paige Jackson (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) and Clara Scotte (Lerberget, Sweden/Höganäs Kullagymnasiet) fired off back-to-back shots that were both stopped by Riddle.

While the Miner defense held the Saints scoreless and to just one shot on-goal in the second half, Maryville's defense did the same to S&T's offense. The Miners only shot on-goal in the second half came four minutes into the half when Jess Haller (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) sent a shot right at MU's Riddle.

Rylee Hanes (Ladera Ranch, Calif./San Juan Hills) finished the game in goal for the Miners and faced just one shot that she saved to, eventually, keep it as a 2-0 final.

Along with Haller, Scotte, Foster, and Jackson, Julia Crets (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) recorded one shot. Kristin Steins (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) got the start in goal today playing the opening 45 minutes of the match and recording two saves.

The Miners will be back in action for Friday night when they open their home schedule against the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
