Softball Takes Down Saints in Extras, Falls in Game Two

ROLLA, MO- The Miners went out with a bang today as they split with Maryville to conclude their 2019 season. S&T took game one in extra innings 2-1 while the Saints came back to take game two 5-0.

GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T 2, MARYVILLE: 1 (8 INNINGS)
It was a pitchers dual in game one, neither team getting much offense going.

The Miners were first on the board today. Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) hit a sac-fly to centerfield to bring Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) home for the 1-0 lead.

It wasn't until the top of the 6th inning when the Saints drove in their first and only run of the game. Samantha Hausl reached base on a fielder's choice that allowed Brianna Livingston to score and tie the game up.

S&T held the Saints in the 7th and forced extra innings.

While MU was able to get a runner to third base on the top of the 8th inning, the Miner defense held strong to hold them to no runs.

The Miner offense came out strong in the bottom of the 8th to take the win. Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) kick things off with a single to right field that would put her on base. After Gretchen Egly's (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) ground out to 1st and Hannah Franceschini's (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) single to left, Young found herself at 3rd base. She would get the slide into home in time on a Maryville passed ball to take the 2-1 win.

Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (9-7) got the start for game one going 8.0 innings with four strikeouts and just four hits allowed.

GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T: 0, MARYVILLE: 5
It was a different story for game two. A four-run 3rd inning would give Maryville an early lead. Along with their offense, the Saints defense held the Miners offensively.

While the Miners had multiple chances to connect for runs, S&T's offense went cold in the second game of the DH; the team getting just four combined hits from Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South), Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley), Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central), and Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson).

MU would get their final run of the game in the top of the 6th inning when Alyssa Callans singled to right field and would advance on an error and allow Brianna Livingston to score.

Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (4-17) got the start for game two going 5.1 innings. Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) went 0.2 innings with no hits or walks allowed while Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) finished off the game for her first recorded inning of the year. She struck out one and allowed no hits in the top of the 7th inning.
