ROLLA, MO- The Miners faced a tough opponent today in Missouri-St. Louis. The Tritons, who are ranked 3
rd in the Midwest Region of NCAA Division II, came out and handed S&T two losses. The Miner fell to 14-32 overall after the 4-0 and 2-1 losses.
GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T: 0, MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS: 4
The Miners and Tritons faced a pitcher's duel in the beginning of the game;
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) and Andee Tiffee giving up just one hit a piece through two inning of work.
UMSL scored their first run in the top of the 3
rd inning when Chelsea Martinez singled to left field and brought Carly Kingery home for the 1-0 lead.
After Missouri-St. Louis picked up another run in the top of the 4
th, the Miners saw their first opportunity of the day to score.
With
Hannah Smith (Oconomowoc, WI/Catholic Memorial) on third base and
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) on second, S&T looked to tie the game. But, the Triton defense held them to get out of the inning with their two run lead.
Another run in the 5
th and 7
th innings would give UMSL their largest lead of the day. While the Miners continued to keep them close, they were not able to connect for a run and dropped the opening game 4-0.
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (4-16) for the start for game one going 7.0 full innings with one strikeout and just two earned runs.
GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T: 1, MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS: 2
Game two seemed to look up for the Miners. Both teams held the other scoreless through five innings.
UMSL got on the board first in the top of the 6
th when Corinne Daley and Lizzy Miller picked up back-to-back hits to bring Andee Tiffee and Carlie Kudary around the bases for the 2-0 lead.
S&T earned one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning when
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) hit a sac-fly to center field that would allow
Hannah Smith (Oconomowoc, WI/Catholic Memorial) to tag up and score.
While the Miners held the Tritons to no runs in the top of the 7
th, the Tritons did just the same in the bottom half of the 7
th. With that, the Miners dropped the second game of the series 2-1.
Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (8-7) got the start for game two going 7.0 innings with five strikeouts and nine hits.
