Miners Swepted by Tritons in Opening Weekend Series

ROLLA, MO- The Miners faced a tough opponent today in Missouri-St. Louis. The Tritons, who are ranked 3rd in the Midwest Region of NCAA Division II, came out and handed S&T two losses. The Miner fell to 14-32 overall after the 4-0 and 2-1 losses.

GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T: 0, MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS: 4
The Miners and Tritons faced a pitcher's duel in the beginning of the game; Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) and Andee Tiffee giving up just one hit a piece through two inning of work.

UMSL scored their first run in the top of the 3rd inning when Chelsea Martinez singled to left field and brought Carly Kingery home for the 1-0 lead.

After Missouri-St. Louis picked up another run in the top of the 4th, the Miners saw their first opportunity of the day to score.

With Hannah Smith (Oconomowoc, WI/Catholic Memorial) on third base and Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) on second, S&T looked to tie the game. But, the Triton defense held them to get out of the inning with their two run lead.

Another run in the 5th and 7th innings would give UMSL their largest lead of the day. While the Miners continued to keep them close, they were not able to connect for a run and dropped the opening game 4-0.

Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (4-16) for the start for game one going 7.0 full innings with one strikeout and just two earned runs.

GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T: 1, MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS: 2
Game two seemed to look up for the Miners. Both teams held the other scoreless through five innings.

UMSL got on the board first in the top of the 6th when Corinne Daley and Lizzy Miller picked up back-to-back hits to bring Andee Tiffee and Carlie Kudary around the bases for the 2-0 lead.

S&T earned one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning when Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) hit a sac-fly to center field that would allow Hannah Smith (Oconomowoc, WI/Catholic Memorial) to tag up and score.

While the Miners held the Tritons to no runs in the top of the 7th, the Tritons did just the same in the bottom half of the 7th. With that, the Miners dropped the second game of the series 2-1.

Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (8-7) got the start for game two going 7.0 innings with five strikeouts and nine hits.
