Softball Splits Doubleheader with Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, KY- The Miners were able to open their weekend road series with a split against Bellarmine University. The Knights took game one by a final score of 3-2 while S&T came back for a game two, 3-1 win.

GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T-2, BELLARMINE-3
The Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Hannah Webb RBI hits in the 1st and 3rd innings, both of which Grace Werner scored on.

Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) made the game a little more interesting in the top of the 4th when she had a 2-RBI double down the right-field line that would bring Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) and Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) home and make it a 2-2 game.

Bellarmine regained their lead in the bottom of the 5th inning when Sabrina Fussenegger turned an 0-2 count into a solo homerun over the left field fence.

S&T wouldn't get another chance to score as the Knights held them to just one hit through the final two innings.

Along with Hamann, Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South), Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central), Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson), and Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) all picked up hits today.

Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (4-13) got the start for game one going 6.0 innings with two strikeouts, no walks, and just one earned run.

GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T-3, BELLARMINE-1
Game two of the doubleheader was a different story for the Miners; while they held the Knights to just four hits during the game, their offense was able to rack up seven hits in their 3-1 win.

Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) got the Miners on the board in the top of the 5th inning when she singled up the middle and brought Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) and Marcy McCalla (Staunton, IL/Staunton) around the bases for a 2-0 lead.

Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) pushed their lead to 3-0 in the top of the 6th when she knocked a ball over the left field fence for her third homerun of the season.

While Bellarmine gained one run back in the bottom half of the 6th, the Miners would be able to hold them off and take the 3-1 win.

Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (7-4) got the start for game two going 7.0 full innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
