LOUISVILLE, KY- The Miners were able to open their weekend road series with a split against Bellarmine University. The Knights took game one by a final score of 3-2 while S&T came back for a game two, 3-1 win.
GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T-2, BELLARMINE-3
The Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Hannah Webb RBI hits in the 1
st and 3
rd innings, both of which Grace Werner scored on.
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) made the game a little more interesting in the top of the 4
th when she had a 2-RBI double down the right-field line that would bring
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) and
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) home and make it a 2-2 game.
Bellarmine regained their lead in the bottom of the 5
th inning when Sabrina Fussenegger turned an 0-2 count into a solo homerun over the left field fence.
S&T wouldn't get another chance to score as the Knights held them to just one hit through the final two innings.
Along with Hamann,
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South),
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central),
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson), and
Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) all picked up hits today.
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (4-13) got the start for game one going 6.0 innings with two strikeouts, no walks, and just one earned run.
GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T-3, BELLARMINE-1
Game two of the doubleheader was a different story for the Miners; while they held the Knights to just four hits during the game, their offense was able to rack up seven hits in their 3-1 win.
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) got the Miners on the board in the top of the 5
th inning when she singled up the middle and brought
Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) and
Marcy McCalla (Staunton, IL/Staunton) around the bases for a 2-0 lead.
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) pushed their lead to 3-0 in the top of the 6
th when she knocked a ball over the left field fence for her third homerun of the season.
While Bellarmine gained one run back in the bottom half of the 6
th, the Miners would be able to hold them off and take the 3-1 win.
Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (7-4) got the start for game two going 7.0 full innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
