ROLLA, MO- The Miner women's basketball team saw their season come to an end today with the 70-91 loss to Rockhurst University.
The Hawks took control of the game early gaining a 13-2 lead just four minutes into the opening quarter. A three-pointer from
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) and an added free-throw from
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) would put the Miners within seven of Rockhurst.
RU would finish the quarter on a 12-6 run to take a 25-12 lead.
Things didn't improve for the Miners in the second quarter; Rockhurst got a three-pointer from Briahita Sebek with 23 seconds left in the half to give the Hawks their largest lead of the game of 22 and take a 54-32 lead heading into the break.
S&T came out with a bang in the third quarter, cutting their deficit to 12 after
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) hit back-to-back three-pointer and a lay-up from
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones). Along with those baskets,
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) and
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) added in long-range points to make five of the teams 11 three-pointers in the third quarter.
Despite the run the Miners made in the third quarter, the Hawks held their lead for the remaining 10 minutes to come out with the 91-70 win.
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) led the way, offensively, for the Miners with 14 points while going 4-7 from long range.
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) added in 12 points on four three-pointers while
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Durk along with
Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) led the team with five assists each.
As a team, the Miners shot 44.8% from the field and 45.8% from the three-point line and recorded a season high 11 three-pointers in the contest.
Missouri S&T finishes the season 9-16 overall and 5-13 in GLVC play. They were ranked as one of the top teams in the league in three-point percentage (36.2), assists per game (15.9), blocked shot per game (4.6), committing the fewest fouls per game (15.9), had an assist-turnover ratio of 0.9, brought down a GLVC best 29.0 defensive rebounds per game, and a league second best in total rebounds per game (39.58).
Junior
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) had a breakout season with the Miners finishing the season ranked as one of the best rebounders and shot-blockers in the league. She ranks 4
th with 9.0 rebounds per game, first with 2.63 blocks per contest, 2
nd in defensive rebounds per game, and 2
nd in total blocked shots.
Freshman
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) also made a name for herself in a Miner uniform finishing as the top scorer for S&T with 11.5 points per contest while scoring a team best 288 points. She is also only the 3
rd freshman in a Miner uniform to score 200 points and grab 100 rebounds in their opening season. The last time a player did this was
Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) in the 2009-2010 season.
