WARRENSBURG, MO- The Miner softball team saw a turn for the better today, splitting with the notorious Jennies of the University of Central Missouri. Despite S&T dropping the first game 5-0, they turned around and took game two by a final score of 7-4.
GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T-0, CENTRAL MISSOURI-5
The Miners held with the Jennies for the opening three frames before UCM got some momentum; Jessica Sader drove in Central Missouri's first run in the bottom of the 4
th with a sac-fly to right field that would allow Hailey Crabtree to tag up and score.
Taylor Dames would add two more runs in the inning with a 2-run shot over the center field fence to make it 3-0. The Jennies would tack on two more runs in the bottom half of the 5
th to give them the 5-0 lead and eventual win.
S&T saw multiple opportunities to bring a runner home, leaving four of their eight people on-base in scoring position.
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) led the charge offensively for the Miners as she picked up two hits.
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley),
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North),
Keely Morgan (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills), and
Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) all recorded one hit each.
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) got the start for game one and went 3.0 innings with one strikeout and two hits. But,
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (2-6) got credited with the loss as she pitched the final three innings allowing four hits and four runs.
GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T-7, CENTRAL MISSOURI-4
Central Missouri jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first two innings. But,
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) started an RBI trend in the top of the 3
rd that would give the Miners the push they needed.
With the bases loaded, Egly would reach on a fielder's choice and send
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) home to make it a 3-1 game.
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) would follow suit and hit a sac-fly out to right field that would bring
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) across the plate to cut the Miners deficit to 3-2.
Klein kept the ball rolling in the top of the 4
th inning when she hit a 2-RBI single up the middle to give S&T their first lead of the day.
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) added one more run in the 4
th when she singled to second base and brought Klein around the bases to push the Miner's lead to 5-3.
After the Jennies came back with another run in the bottom half of the 4
th inning, Egly would secure S&T's win with a double to centerfield that would bring Jackson and Young home to give the Miners their 7-4 win.
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) got the start for game two and pitched 1.2 innings, but
Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (2-1) gets credited for the win after pitching 5.1 innings with two strikeouts and allowing four hits.
Jackson, Young, and Egly all had themselves a game with two hits each while Klein,
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson),
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North), and
Hannah Smith (Oconomowoc, WI/Catholic Memorial) all chipped in one hit each.
