ST. LOUIS, MO- Looking to redeem themselves from last Saturday's loss to top-ranked Drury University, Missouri S&T headed to St. Louis to take on the Saints of Maryville University. A commanding first half lead from the Saints proved to be too much as they took the 88-66 win.
The Miners (9-13, 5-10 GLVC) caught a hard break to start the game, picking up three quick fouls in the first 64 seconds of the game. Maryville (17-8, 11-5 GLVC) took full advantage of these and connected for a 5-0 lead.
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) got S&T on the board on the very next possession with a three-pointer from the wing.
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) added to Durk's three with a long-range basket of her own to give the Miners their first lead of the night.
Fatma Aouinet (Sfax, Tunisia/Elevation Prep Academy) netted her first baskets of 2019 with consecutive lay-ups while Kabetske added in another three-pointer to put the Miners up 15-14 with 3:06 left in the quarter. Maryville would hold them to just one basket for the reminder of the quarter while the Saints caught fire and got three-pointers from Kayla Stewart and Mary Barton to take a 22-17 lead going into the second quarter.
Maryville lit it up in the second quarter shooting 55.6% from the field and holding the Miners to just 10 points which included back-to-back three pointers from
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern).
The Saints began the second quarter on a 12-2 run to extend their lead out to 34-19. It was all MU from there are the Miners would only get as close as 10 points before Maryville ended the half on a 10-2 run to take a 44-27 lead.
Missouri S&T found their groove in the third quarter, opening the half with a 13-4 run to cut the Saints lead to 51-40.
S&T and MU traded baskets for the remaining five minutes of the third quarter to look at a 65-51 score heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
Maryville's commanding first half lead would prove to be too much for the Miners to come back from. The Saints would extend their lead to as much as 23 points in the fourth quarter before taking the 88-66 win.
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) led the Miners with 13 points while going 3-6 from long range.
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively, while
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) led the team with 10 rebounds.
As a team, the Miners shot 37.1% from the field and 45.5% from three-point range. They dished out 16 assists while pulling down 35 rebounds.
