ROLLA, MO- Despite losing a couple of games to weather this past weekend, the Miner softball team came out with a 1-2 record and prepare for the Lewis Flyers D-2 Midwest Dome Invitational this weekend.
After a walk-off loss to Tiffin University on Friday afternoon, the Miners turned around the short-gamed the Blue Knights of Urbana University with an 8-0 win.
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North),
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township), and
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) all collected two RBIs in the game while
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) drove in a run as well.
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) saw her best game of the season this far with 6.0 innings pitched with six strikeouts and only two hits allowed.
It would not be the same story in the Miners second game of the day when they faced off against Trevecca Nazarene. The Trojans took and early 5-0 lead in the top of the second when a double-play ball allowed a TNU player to score. S&T would answer RBI hits from
Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) and
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) and a passed ball from TNU that would allow
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) to score.
Trevecca Nazarene came back in the 5
th inning and went long twice with homeruns from Mary Collins and Kelsey Seitz to push their lead to 8-3. S&T would get two runs back in the bottom half of the 5
th inning, but it would not be enough for a comeback as the Trojans took the game 9-5.
The Miners, offensively, are showing great strength with five players hitting above .300 and one,
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson), coming in with a .429 batting average. Allen currently leads the team with two homeruns while
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) picked up her first career homerun two weeks ago in the team's opening weekend in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Walter has been the driving force for the Miners in the circle to start the season; she currently holds a 2-1 record with 13 strikeouts and a 3.75 ERA.
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) has made five appearances in the circle for S&T this season going 1-4 with a 5.83 ERA.
This weekend, the Miners will face off against Findlay (0-2), Purdue Northwest (0-0), Ashland (0-0), Grand Valley State (0-0), and Wayne State (3-2). It will be the first time the Miners have faced Findlay and Purdue Northwest. However, the team is very familiar with Ashland, Grand Valley State, and Wayne State as they have faced all three opponents the last three seasons in the Midwest Dome Invitational.
The last win for the Miners over Ashland and Wayne State came in the 2016 season when they came out with 6-1 and 3-1 wins, respectively. The last time S&T saw a win over Grand Valley State was back in 1992 when they opened up the season with a 9-2 victory over the Lakers in Ocoee, Florida.
