ROLLA, MO- The Miner women's basketball team faced a tough challenge today as they hosted Drury University (24-0, 14-0 GLVC), one of two undefeated teams left in NCAA Division II Women's Basketball. While they shot well, the offense of the Panthers could not be stopped as S&T saw a 104-70 defeat.
Down 20-12 with 2:03 left in the first quarter,
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) sank two free-throws to cut the Miner's deficit to just six. The Panthers would answer with a 9-2 run to finish out the opening 10 minutes to take a 29-16 lead.
S&T (9-12, 5-9 GLVC) cut their double-digit deficit to eight mid-way through the second quarter when Kabetske hit
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) on the wing for one of her four made three-pointers.
The Miners kept it close for most of the quarter but the Panthers offense caught fire late in the half. Drury went on an 8-0 run to push their lead back out to 45-29 with 1:45 remaining in the half. S&T would get back-to-back baskets from
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) to end the half and put the Miners down 48-33.
Drury opened up shop in the third quarter, outscoring the Miners 39-17 and shooting 63% from the field. They would extend their lead to as much as 37 by the end of the quarter.
S&T went on to outscore the Panthers in the final quarter, but Drury was too far gone for the Miners to make a run at them. While Missouri S&T went 4-5 from long range in the final 10 minutes, the Panthers would cruise to the 104-70 win.
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) led the Miners with 18 points on 7-12 shooting while
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic),
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones),
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy), and
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) all added in double figures. Baylor led all players with 10 rebounds and picked up her 7th double-double of the season.
The Miners finished the game shooting 43.9% from the field and 85.7% from the free-throw line. As a team, they went 8-16 from three-point range and dished out 20 assists.
