Miners Explosive Offense Earns Them First GLVC Win of Season

ROLLA, MO- S&T picked up their first GLVC win of the season with a nail-biting 76-73 win over the Saints of Maryville University.

The Miners had a big presence from their post players tonight; getting their first 10 points of the game from Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay). After back-to-back lay-ups from Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown), the Miners found themselves with a 14-4 lead with just 2:53 left in the opening quarter.

Maryville would get four late free-throws from Mary Barton and UU Long to put the Saints down 16-11 heading into the second quarter.

Both teams traded baskets in the second quarter, matching each other point for points through the second stanza of the first half.

MU would take their first lead of the game with 5:28 remaining in the after Hunter Stidham found Cici Rindy in the paint to take the 23-21 lead. It wouldn't last long as S&T picked up quick buckets from Durk and big three-pointer from Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) to inch ahead of the Saints with less than three minutes remaining in the half.

Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) would extend the Miners lead back out to three just before the break with a jumper from the free-throw line.

It would remain close for the remainder of the game, neither team able to pull away from the other.

With 59 seconds left in the third quarter, Kerr sank two free-throw to put the Miners up 51-46. The Saints answered right back at the buzzer when Barton completed the and-one play to cut S&T's lead to 51-49.
The Miner's saving grace in the fourth quarter would be the 13 points scored in the paint.

Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) sealed the deal for S&T with five seconds remaining in the game when she sank two free-throws to give the Miners the 76-73 lead, and the eventual win.

Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) led all players tonight with a season high 25 points on 9-13 shooting. She also picked up her first double-double of the season with 13 rebounds. Senior post player Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) picked up her sixth double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) added in 14 and 11 points, respectively.

As a team, the Miners shot 52.7% from the field and forced 17 Maryville turnovers.

Missouri S&T (4-3, 1-0 GLVC) will play one last game before the end of the year. They host the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University on Tuesday, December 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in Gibson Arena.
