ROLLA, Mo. – A strong shooting night from long range propelled Missouri S&T to a victory Tuesday night in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener, as the Miners used a season-high 16 three-point baskets to come away with a 72-59 win over Maryville at Gibson Arena.
Facing a zone defense for much of the night, the Miners (2-4, 1-0 GLVC) connected on 16 of their 34 attempts from beyond the arc, which included 11 in the first half as they built a 15-point lead by the intermission. The 16 treys were the most for S&T in a game since they made 17 against Truman State on Jan. 30, 2014.
It was a three-pointer by
CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison) 2:37 into the contest that put the Miners in the lead for good at 6-5 and the long range barrage continued throughout the half, as they used the three-point shot to add onto their advantage.
S&T led 15-13 midway through the first half, but got three-pointers on four consecutive possessions – two by
Ty'Ohn Trimble (Alton, IL/Alton) – to extend their lead to 27-15 in a span of just under two minutes. Over the final 10 minutes of the first half, the Miners scored 24 of their 26 points from outside the three-point line.
The Miners got off to a slow start offensively at the beginning of the second half, but were able to keep their lead in double figures for nearly the entire period. Maryville (3-4, 0-1 GLVC) closed to within nine on a lay-in by Kamto Eze with 11:33 to play, but S&T ran off nine of the next 10 points to extend the margin back to 17 by the 8:39 mark.
Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy) scored a season-high 21 points to lead Missouri S&T and hit five three-pointers along the way, while
Jordan Newt (San Francisco, CA/Malibu) scored 12 – all on three-point shots – in his first start of the season. The Miners shot just 37.5 percent from the field, but held the Saints to 40 percent overall and to six-of-14 from long range.
Scott also collected nine rebounds as S&T outrebounded the Saints 41-36; the Miners also blocked a season-high seven shots in the contest.
Jalen Gant had 15 points to lead Maryville in the scoring department.
Missouri S&T has just one more game scheduled in the month of December, which will take place Dec. 17 against Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla.
