Miners Close Out 2019 at Home Against Missouri Baptist on Tuesday

12/13/2019 10:19:00 AM

ROLLA, MO- After opening the season 3-3, the Miners got a much needed win in their first GLVC match-up of the season. S&T picked up the 76-73 win over the Saints of Maryville University last Tuesday night, which was the first opening GLVC win since the 2016-2017 season.

Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) could not be stopped as she scored a team-high 25 points while pulling down 13 rebounds. Her performance, along with two steals, two blocks, and three assists, against the Saints earned her the GLVC Women's Basketball Player of the Week.

Three other Miner players scored in double figures to help them out; Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) went 4-9 from the floor and a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line to add in 14 points while Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) chipped in 11. Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) picked up her sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Kerr and Baylor's double-double performances in the win made them the first duo to record double-figures in a game since the 2011-12 season when Hailee Parks and Fareedah Washington put up 21 and 12 points and 14 and 11 rebounds, respectively.

About Missouri Baptist:
The Spartans are off to a rocky start to begin the 2019-20 season dropping their first six games, two of which were American Midwest Conference matches. While MBU picked up their first wins of the season in AMC play last week, the Spartans faltered against the Lady Lynx of Lindenwood-Belleville this past Thursday night.

After going into the second quarter with a four point lead, the Spartans offense went cold in the second quarter that proved to be costly.

LU-B held Missouri Baptist to just six second quarter points and forced nine turnovers in the 10 minute span. While MBU got the deficit down to as much as eight, late Lindenwood-Belleville free-throws secured the win and handed the Spartans their seventh loss of the season.

Tionne Taylor and Alexis Allstun have been the heart of the Spartans offense this season, averaging 15.2 and 13.0 points, respectively, while Allstun has been Missouri Baptist's biggest presence on the boards with 7.0 per contest.
The Miners have seen great success over the Spartans in the past, picking up two wins over the last three seasons.

Last season when the two teams met, S&T used a 38-point second quarter to surge them to a 52-25 halftime lead. The Miners would hold the Spartans to just 24 second half points and cruise to an 82-49 win.
