ROLLA, MO- The Miners picked up their third straight win of the season with the 80-61 win over the Eagles of Avila University.
S&T's hot shooting from their two previous games did not make an appearance in the opening quarter of play; Avila held a lead over Missouri S&T for the first seven minutes of the game until
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) stole a pass from the Eagles and laid it in to give the Miners an 11-10 lead.
The Miners would extend their lead out to 15-10 before the end of the quarter before AU rallied for a 7-2 run to end the quarter to take the 18-17 lead.
Avila opened the second quarter with back-to-back baskets from Paige Esry to extend their lead out to six. Both the Eagles and Miners would trade baskets throughout the quarter before looking at a 38-35 score in favor of Avila.
The third quarter was a different story for the Miners; S&T opened the second half on a 15-3 run to take a 50-41 lead. The duo of
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) and
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) led the charge in the third, combining for 16 of the teams 29 points to take a commanding 64-45 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
S&T and AU played dead even in the final stretch of the game, but the offensive damage of the Miners in the third quarter was enough for them to hold on for the 80-61 win.
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) led the Miners with her second consecutive double-double (fourth of the year) with 18 points and 11 rebounds on 7-11 shooting and added in four blocks while
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) was right behind her with 15 points and eight boards of her own.
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township),
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern), and
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) all hit double figure scoring today while
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) dished out a game high six assists.
As a team, the Miners shot 46% from the field and had a season best 80% from the free-throw line.
Missouri S&T (3-2, 0-0 GLVC) will take on Southern Arkansas before beginning Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Tuesday, December 3 when they host the Saints of Maryville University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Gibson Arena.
