LEBANON, Ill. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team fought tooth and nail with 17
th-ranked McKendree Friday night, but the Bearcats got a goal in the latter stages of the second half to come away with a 1-0 win in the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.
The GLVC-leading Bearcats (13-1-2, 12-0-2 GLVC) broke the scoreless tie in the 81
st minute when Rulo Arteaga redirected a ball heading towards the net from Javi Soto and got it past S&T goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville).
S&T (5-9-2, 4-8-2 GLVC) had kept the Bearcats in check for a good portion of the evening, as the hosts had only three shots on net over the first 80-plus minutes of play prior to Arteaga's goal. S&T had a good scoring opportunity in the final seconds when it got ball deep into the McKendree end of the field, but the ball got cleared out and the clock ran out before the Miners could produce another chance.
In the first half, McKendree had eight shots to the Miners' two, but only two of the eight Bearcat attempts were on net as were both of S&T's first half shots. McKendree finished the game with a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Bearcats also had 11 corner kick chances in the game to S&T's one.
Posey finished with three saves in the nets for the Miners, who will close their 2019 regular season Sunday when they face Southern Indiana in a 2:30 p.m. contest in Evansville, Ind.
