12th-ranked Miner swimmers knock off third-ranked Delta State

ROLLA, Mo. – With first place finishes in eight of the 11 events, the 12th-ranked Missouri S&T swimming team defeated third-ranked Delta State Friday in the first of two meets in which they compete against one another by a score of 111-94 at the S&T Pool.

The Miners had a pair of events where they had the top three finishers, first in the 200-yard butterfly won by Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy) in 1:52.17; he was followed by Aaron Taske (Fairfield, OH/Saint Xavier) in 1:52.94 and Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) in 1:56.11.  S&T followed that by sweeping the top three spots in the 100-yard freestyle, as Colten Becker (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) won in 47.19 seconds and was trailed by Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch) in 47.24 and Marco Flores (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/SERAN Private Bilingual School) in 47.25 seconds.

A third event sweep for the Miners came in the 500-yard freestyle, headed by a winning performance by Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) in 4:38.11.  Connor Wiedemeier finished second in that race in 4:46.13 and Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) took third in 4:47.39.

Individually, S&T also got first place performances from Taske in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:34.63 and Wiedemeier in the 200-freestyle in 1:42.54, while Huffman recorded the best time in the 200-yard breaststroke of 2:04.14.

In addition, the Miners won the 400-yard medley relay as Alec Davis (Joplin, MO/Joplin) overcame a deficit in the freestyle leg of the race to help the team that included Mark Cavanaugh (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista), Josh Umrysh and Fergus win in a time of 3:24.72.  S&T's 400-yard freestyle relay quartet of Flores, Taske, Wiedemeier and Betts also had the best time in that event with a mark of 3:08.80.

Second place performances on Friday came from Becker in the 200-freestyle in 1:45.18, Betts in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.27 seconds, Huffman in the 400-individual medley in 4:05.33, Cavanaugh in the 200-backstroke in 1:55.94 and Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:06.80.

Flores placed third in the 50-freestyle in 21.39 seconds as did Mercer in the 400-IM in 4:05.67 and Dylan Friesz (Round Rock, TX/Hutto) in the 200-backstroke in 1:57.03.

The Miners and Delta State will part of the field in the Lindenwood Invitational Saturday, a meet that will also include second-ranked Indianapolis, fourth-ranked McKendree, eighth-ranked Drury and No. 10-ranked Lindenwood at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.
