ROLLA, Mo. – Following a loss that ended its five-game winning streak, Missouri S&T's football team will now prepare for a clash Saturday night against nationally-ranked and Great Lakes Valley Conference leader Indianapolis on the Greyhounds' home turf at Key Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. (Eastern time).
The Miners overcame a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to take the lead at Truman State on
Deshawn Jones' (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) third touchdown run of the game with 2:30 remaining, but the Bulldogs came back down the field and won the game on a field goal with seven seconds remaining. The loss dropped S&T to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in GLVC play.
Indianapolis moved up in the national rankings this week to seventh in one poll and eighth in the other following a bye week on its schedule and brings records of 6-0 and 4-0 in the GLVC into the game. The Greyhounds come into the game as the second-highest scoring team on average in NCAA Division II as they are scoring better than 50 points per contest.
ABOUT THE MINERS: While Indianapolis leads the GLVC in scoring, the Miners come into the game ranked third in that department with an average of 36 points per game. S&T is also averaging 467 yards of total offense per game – the 17
th-best mark in NCAA Division II – behind a balanced attack that ranks in the top half of the conference in both rushing and passing.
Quarterback
Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) has completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 1,868 yards and 14 touchdowns and enters Saturday's game needing only 20 yards through the air to move into the top 10 for passing yardage in a season. Simms has also rushed for six scores this year.
His top target has been
Logan Armontrout (Centralia, MO/Centralia) with 29 catches for 436 yards and four touchdowns, while
Josh Brown (Gainesville, FL/North Marion HS) has caught 28 throws for 471 yards and four scores.
Payton McAlister (Decatur, TX/Decatur), who had a 62-yard touchdown reception Saturday, has 23 receptions for 270 yards and three touchdowns while adding 299 yards on the ground.
Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) leads the Miners on the ground with 467 yards on the year that is good for fourth in the GLVC, while
Aaron Moya (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) is also among the top 10 in the conference, ranking eighth with his 397 yards.
Safety
Justin Onwugbufor (Maize, KS/Northwest) leads the Miner defense with 52 tackles on the season, while linebacker
Stefan Camplin (Raytown, MO/Raytown) has been in on 45 stops and fellow linebacker
Wulfe Retzlaff (Truckee, CA/Truckee) has made 41 tackles.
Tershawn Wharton (University City, MO/University City) has a team-high six tackles for a loss this season and is tied with linebacker
Jack Hayes (Republic, MO/Republic) with three quarterback sacks. The Miners have made 46 tackles behind the line of scrimmage this season and rank eighth in the nation in turnover margin; S&T has forced opposing teams into 18 turnovers over the first seven contests.
ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds enter Saturday's game ranked seventh in the latest D2Football.com rankings, eighth in the AFCA poll and are one of just 14 undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division II at 6-0. UIndy, who was idle last week, has outscored its opponents by a margin of 302-83 and ranks among the top six nationally in both scoring offense and scoring defense. The Greyhounds' average of 50.3 points per game is exceeded only by the 50.9 per contest posted by Central Missouri.
The ringmaster of the UIndy offense is quarterback TJ Edwards, who was the GLVC Offensive Player of the Year in 2016 when he was running the show at Southwest Baptist. Edwards has completed 69 percent of his passes for 1,337 yards and 14 touchdowns while also running for an additional 181 yards and five scores.
Al McKeller, last year's GLVC Offensive Player of the Year, leads the UIndy rushing attack with 640 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Toriano Clinton has rushed for an additional 355 yards. Maurice Robinson leads the Greyhounds with 23 receptions for 380 yards, while Aaron Matio has caught 16 balls for 232 yards. Daveon Bell has a team-high five scoring catches.
Linebacker Joe Lambright and safety Connor Steeb have 23 tackles apiece to lead the Greyhounds; Lambright is also tied with Alex Parsons with eight tackles for a loss. UIndy's defense ranks fifth in NCAA Division II against the run as it is giving up just 59.3 yards per game.
