KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T rallied from a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to take a lead with 2:30 left in the game, but Truman State responded with a drive that led to a game-winning 28-yard field goal by Josh Scheiderer with seven seconds left to give the Bulldogs a 41-39 win at Stokes Stadium.
S&T had taken the lead with touchdowns on back-to-back fourth quarter drives, the second coming on a 13-yard run by
Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) with 2:30 left to take a 39-38 lead. However, the Bulldogs were able to come back down the field – aided by a Miner penalty following a sack and quarterback Jaden Barr getting free from a couple of Miner defenders near the line of scrimmage to get a first down on a third-and-10 play – and reached the S&T 11-yard line to set up Scheiderer's game-winning field goal.
The loss was the first in Great Lakes Valley Conference play for the Miners, who dropped to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC and saw its five-game winning streak halted. Truman went to 6-1 and 3-1 in conference play.
The Bulldogs struck first late in the opening period on Barr's nine-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Newell. Truman's defense kept the Miners in check in the opening quarter – S&T had just one first down over the first 15 minutes – but on the first play of the second quarter, Jones raced around the right side for a 53-yard touchdown run to tie the contest.
Truman answered right back with a scoring drive in which it converted a pair of third down plays to set up a 21-yard score on a reverse by Jaylen Jefferson. The drive began after Jefferson had returned the kickoff after the Jones score out of the end zone out to Truman's 42-yard line.
But the Miners hit another big play when they got the ball back – moments after a Bulldog penalty negated a fumble recovery – when
Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) hit
Payton McAlister (Decatur, TX/Decatur) over the middle and after breaking a tackle, raced to the end zone for a 62-yard scoring reception.
Truman regained the lead with just over two minutes to play in the opening half when Barr hit Jake Ellis in the back of the end zone for a nine-yard scoring pass. S&T had Truman in a third-and-13 situation, but a completion to Ian Ronan and a subsequent penalty on the Miners set the Bulldogs up for their go-ahead score.
The Bulldogs extended their lead on the opening possession of the second half, turning a third-and-12 play into a touchdown as Newell got behind the Miner defense and hauled in a 50-yard scoring pass from Barr to make it 28-14.
S&T drove back down the field following the Truman score and reached the Bulldog 13-yard line before the drive stalled, forcing it to settle for a 30-yard field goal from
Ben Styron (Harrisonville, MO/Harrisonville). Later in the quarter, the Miners caught a huge break when a punt went off a Truman player and S&T recovered the loose ball at the three-yard line. Jones crossed the goal line on the next play, then scored again on a two-point conversion to make it a three-point game.
Truman extended the lead back to 10, however, when Barr broke loose on a read option play and raced 69 yards for a touchdown with 2:07 left in the third quarter. Scheiderer added a 33-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 38-25.
The Miners made it a one-possession game with 5:39 to play when Simms capped a 79-yard drive by scoring on a quarterback sneak on fourth down from the one; Styron's extra point cut the margin to six.
Truman got a first down into S&T territory after getting the ball back, but
Tershawn Wharton (University City, MO/University City) knocked the ball away from Barr and recovered the loose ball at the S&T 48-yard line with 3:24 to go. Two plays later, Simms hit
Breon Michel (Colorado Springs, CO/Vista Ridge) down the sidelines to the Truman 13, then Jones scored his third touchdown of the contest to tie the contest. Styron's point after gave the Miners their first lead of the game.
S&T finished with 372 yards of total offense, with Simms completing 22-of-35 passes for 261 yards. Jones ran for 89 yards and moved into second place on the Miners' all-time rushing list with a total of 3,145 yards. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, finished with 461 yards of offense in the contest, with Barr throwing for 272 yards and running for another 107.
Missouri S&T will remain on the road next Saturday as it faces 10
th-ranked and undefeated Indianapolis in a 6 p.m. (Eastern time). The Greyhounds were idle on Saturday and will bring a 6-0 overall record and 4-0 GLVC mark into next weekend's matchup.
