INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Missouri S&T entered Saturday's game ranked in the top 20 in NCAA Division II in total offense, but Indianapolis' defense shackled the Miner attack as the eighth-ranked Greyhounds handed S&T a 48-7 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback.
The Miners came into the contest averaging 467 yards per game, but managed just 45 yards in the first half and 196 for the game as it dropped its second straight outing to fall to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the GLVC. UIndy, meanwhile, put up 570 yards against S&T as it won for the seventh time in as many games and moved to 5-0 in conference play.
S&T came up empty in each of its first two possessions, then the Greyhounds grabbed the lead in the latter stages of the first quarter when quarterback TJ Edwards escaped from a potential sack and scrambled into the end zone for a three-yard scoring run. The drive was kept alive two plays earlier when UIndy converted on fourth-and-two deep in S&T territory.
UIndy drove into the S&T red zone on its next possession, but
Zach Gallina (Vista, CA/Rancho Buena Vista) made a leaping interception in the end zone in front of Daveon Bell to halt that scoring chance. The Miners then made another red zone stop when the Greyhounds got the ball back following an S&T punt, as Joe Boettcher got a hand on an Edwards pass on fourth down to force it fall incomplete.
Later in the first half, the Miners caught another break momentarily when an apparent touchdown pass to Bell was called back due to a penalty, but the Greyhounds extended their lead three plays later on an Al McKellar six-yard scoring run to make it 14-0.
Then following an S&T interception, UIndy drove to the S&T four-yard line – but a penalty against the Greyhounds backed them up to the 19 and on the final play of the half, Edwards scrambled around but was stopped well shy of the goal line as the clock expired.
Toriano Clinton returned the opening kickoff of the second half to the Miners' 38-yard line, then McKellar took care of the rest with runs of 28 and 10 yards to extend the UIndy lead, which was followed by an Edwards-to-Bell scoring pass on the Greyhounds' next trip down the field and a blocked punt recovered in the end zone for a touchdown to make it a 34-0 contest.
The Miners got their lone score late in the third quarter with a 62-yard scoring drive that culminated with a four-yard touchdown pass from
Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) to
Breon Michel (Colorado Springs, CO/Vista Ridge).
Simms completed 16-of-35 passes for 107 yards, with
Josh Brown (Gainesville, FL/North Marion HS) hauling in five passes and Michel finishing with four. The Miners had only 32 rushing yards, while the Greyhounds finished the night with 403 as McKellar ran for 184 yards and Clinton posting 140 more.
The Miners will return to Allgood-Bailey Stadium next Saturday to host Southwest Baptist in a 1 p.m. contest. The Bearcats dropped to 3-5 after a 24-14 loss Saturday at McKendree.
