Women's Soccer Bounced By Rockhurst, 4-1

Rolla, Mo. – Three straight second-half goals by Rockhurst thwarted any hopes of the Missouri S&T women's soccer team  earning a victory or even a tie this Sunday (Sept. 30) afternoon as the Miners were dealt a 4-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) setback by the Hawks at the S&T Soccer Field.

The match wasn't scoreless for long as Rockhurst's Stephanie Ostrander netted her eighth of the year with a header off a crossing pass to give the visitors a 1-0 at the 7:07 mark of the opening half.

The score stayed that way until Missouri S&T tallied the equalizer in the 75th minute of play when junior defender Chayse Richardson (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) knocked the ball into the Rockhurst goal just below the crossbar and out of the RU goalkeeper's reach off a rebound from a blocked free kick for her first goal of this season.

The Hawks, who would outshoot the Miners 14-12 in the match, countered with three unanswered goals in the final 14 minutes of play.  Brittany Valieant registered what proved to be the game-winning marker with a point blank shot after the ball rebounded off S&T senior goalkeeper Liz Carrano (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) at 76:17, which represented her first on the year.  Less than six minutes later, Rockhurst netted its third goal as McKenna Leetch successfully headed the ball into the Miners' goal for her second on the season to give the Hawks a 3-1 cushion.  The Hawks added their fourth one less than a minute later as Elle Guttman's second of the 2018 campaign occurred on a redirect in front of the S&T net.

The win gives Rockhurst a 5-4-1 record overall on the season as the Hawks stand at 4-2-0 in conference action.

Liz Carrano (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) started for S&T and played the entire match finishing with three saves.  Her counterpart, Megan Meyers racked up four saves while also serving the full 90 minutes between the posts.

The Miners, who garnered a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks for the contest, committed three fouls to Rockhurst's eight total.

Five S&T players - junior defender-midfielder Julia Crets (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North), Chayse Richardson (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville), senior midfielder Taylor Vollmer (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West), junior forward Kayla Foster (Sand Springs, Okla./Charles Page), and senior midfielder Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) all compiled two shots apiece to lead the Miners.  Both of Crets' shot attempts were on the Rockhurst goal.

Missouri S&T, which is currently 2-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the GLVC, will conclude its three-match home stand Friday, Oct. 5, as the Miners face off against the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons at the S&T Soccer Field starting at 5 p.m. (CT).
