ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team has had its share of heartbreaking setbacks in the first month of the 2018, but on Sunday afternoon at the S&T Soccer Field, one of those close results went in its favor.
Tyler Sivadon (Spring, TX/Concordia Lutheran) scored 3:29 into overtime to lift the Miners to a 3-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Rockhurst, giving S&T its first home victory of the season and its second win in its last three contests.
The Miners (2-7, 2-4 GLVC) were awarded a free kick opportunity just inside of midfield and
Joshua Zembas (Wadsworth, OH/Wadsworth) put the ball right into the middle of the box in front of Hawk goalkeeper Nick Randazzo. After the ball hit the turf, Sivadon got a head on the ball and popped it over the head of Randazzo to give the Miners a win over Rockhurst (3-4-2, 2-2-2 GLVC) for the third consecutive season.
The scoring began Sunday with a pair of penalty kick goals, as Rockhurst's Pablo Salvador Lopez scored in the eighth minute and S&T's
Hunter Short (Rolla, MO/Rolla) scored on one a little over three minutes later to tie the game. From there, the contest was a tighly-contest affair that remained tied until S&T grabbed the lead in the second half.
In the 61
st minute, a Hawk clearing pass went right out to
Sean Perryman (Springfield, MO/Glendale), who one-timed it to
Mark Poindexter (Raymore, MO/Raymore-Peculiar) and he ripped a shot by Randazzo to give the Miners the lead. However, Rockhurst tied the score in the 66
th minute after getting a free kick near the S&T end line; Lopez sent a pass over to Federico Verlucchi for the game-tying goal.
Rockhurst held a 16-13 advantage in shots and had six corner kick chances to S&T's two.
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) finished with four saves in goal for S&T, including one in overtime to keep the game even.
Missouri S&T will close out its three-game homestand Friday when it hosts Missouri-St. Louis in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
