ROLLA, Mo. – For the third consecutive game, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team ended up in an overtime, but unfortunately for the Miners, they ended up on the short end of the score for the second time in that three-game span as Missouri-St. Louis took a 3-2 at the S&T Soccer Field.
Kenan Selimovic scored the second of his two late goals in the fourth minute of the second overtime period to win the game for the Tritons (5-5, 4-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference) and drop the Miners to 2-8 overall and 2-5 in the GLVC.
S&T took the initial lead in the contest on an unassisted goal by
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) in the ninth minute, as he hit a shot from about 18 yards away that slipped through the hands of UMSL goalkeeper Nedin Kudic and rolled across the goal line. The Tritons had the run of play for about the next 15 minutes before the Miners turned the tables for the better part of the balance of the half.
However, in the final minute of the half, the Tritons were awarded a penalty kick and Magnus Anderson converted it to tie the score going into the intermission.
The Miners got a penalty kick chance of their own nearly 12 minutes into the second half and regained the advantage as
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) hit his attempt past Kudic. But in the 81
st minute, the Tritons evened things up again when Selimovic got a pass in front of the net from Garrett Bass and got it by S&T goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville).
Moments later, the Tritons got another penalty kick opportunity, but Anderson hit his shot wide of the net to keep the game tied.
After the teams played a scoreless first overtime period, Selimovic ended the game when he redirected a feed from Nick Harper after nearly three and a half minutes had elapsed in the second extra session.
The Miners outshot the Tritons 20-12 on the night and had 10 shots on goal to UMSL's seven. Posey finished with four saves in goal for S&T, while the Miner goal scorers – Denis and Ulfarsson – had three shots apiece.
Missouri S&T will hit the road Sunday for a 2:30 p.m. matchup against Truman State in Kirksville, Mo.
