KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A game that was scoreless for better than 66 minutes turned into a scoring spree down the stretch and fortunately for Missouri S&T's men's soccer team, the last goal Sunday was theirs to come away victorious.
Trey Haman (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis University HS) scored in the sixth minute of overtime – in the Miners' fourth consecutive overtime contest – to give S&T a 3-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference win on a rainy day at Truman State as the Miners won an overtime contest for the second time in as many Sundays.
Paal Benum's (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) throw-in from near midfield went past the Truman defense and to
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik), who sent a cross to the front of the net that Haman redirected to give the Miners their fifth straight win over the Bulldogs and extended their unbeaten streak over Truman to eight games.
S&T (3-8, 3-5 GLVC) broke the scoreless tie in the 67
th minute when
Hunter Short (Rolla, MO/Rolla) took a pass from
Eric Ferenbach (Godfrey, IL/Alton) and hit a shot from about 15 yards away past Bulldog goalkeeper Jacob Gunn. However, that lead was short lived, as Truman's Thomas Bean knotted the score as he took a crossing pass and while diving, headed the ball into the net in the 70
th minute.
The Miners answered right back in the flurry of goals, as they were awarded a penalty kick following a hand ball in the box just over a minute later; Ulfarsson converted it to put S&T back into the lead.
Truman (2-5-4, 0-5-3 GLVC) drew even again in the 82
nd minute of play when Matt Yankowitz sent a cross in front of the net and Collin McDonough got to the loose ball and put it in the back of the net.
With just over five minutes to go, McDonough had a golden opportunity to put the Bulldogs in front, but his redirect attempt was turned away by S&T goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville).
The Miners outshot Truman 8-6 during the scoreless first half of play, but at game's end, the Bulldogs held a 22-20 advantage in shots. S&T had nine shots on goal to Truman's six, as Posey finished with four saves.
Missouri S&T will close out its 2018 home schedule next weekend with games on Friday and Sunday; the final homestand begins with Friday's 7:30 p.m. contest against McKendree at the S&T Soccer Field.
