ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team was unable to find the net Friday night and McKendree scored a pair of long distance goals in the early stages of the second half to down the Miners 2-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
Following a scoreless first half in which McKendree outshot the Miners 7-4, the Bearcats (7-4-1, 5-3-1 GLVC) got two goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half that ended up making the difference in the contest. The first came in the 51
st minute, when Eddie Davis hit a shot from 35 yards away that sailed over the head of S&T goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) and into the net.
That goal was followed by another long-range tally in the 57
th minute, when Raul Artega settled a pass that was a bit offline, wheeled and hit a from about 25 yards away in the middle of the field into the back of the net to double the McKendree lead.
Both teams had good scoring chances in the first half, as Posey stopped a quick redirected head ball by Lukas Vaiciunas in the 17
th minute of action and S&T's
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) was just off the mark on a shot from just outside the box in the 36
th minute of play.
McKendree had a 14-9 advantage in shots, as Posey finished with three saves on the night.
Missouri S&T (3-9, 3-6 GLVC) will play its final home game of the 2018 season Sunday when it hosts Illinois Springfield at 2:30 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. The Miners' four seniors will be honored prior to the start of the contest.
