Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's soccer team battled William Jewell even for much of the way, but came out on the short end of a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) decision to the Cardinals this Friday (Sept. 28) evening at the S&T Soccer Field.
Missouri S&T, which is now 2-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the GLVC, did register a 16-12 overall shots advantage for the match, which included an 8-5 margin in the first 45 minutes of play. The Miners would conclude the outing holding a 5-3 lead in shots on goal to go with a 2-1 edge in corner kick tries.
The lone score of the contest occurred in the opening half of play as WJC's Kayla Crowder tallied her fourth of the year as a result of Allison Malott gaining possession of the ball on a steal and feeding a pass ahead to Crowder, who placed the ball beyond the reach of S&T senior goalkeeper
Liz Carrano (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) into the Miners' net.
S&T's best scoring chances came in the opening half as a shot by sophomore defender
Cameryn Boucher (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) in the 33rd minute of action hit the crossbar of the Cardinals' goal and then senior midfielder
Morgan Sikora (Highland, Ill./Highland) did likewise with 1:28 remaining before intermission.
The Cardinals had a great opportunity to add an insurance goal in the second half but misfired from just outside the middle of the S&T goal. Conversely, the Miners appeared to net the equalizer late in the match but S&T was ruled offside to negate the potential tying score.
The physical matchup featured a total of 24 fouls called between the two teams as William Jewell was credited with 15 while the Miners were whistled for nine infractions in the contest.
William Jewell goalkeeper Kaylie Kappelmann played all 90 minutes in net and made five stops in earning the victory while S&T's
Liz Carrano (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) garnered three saves in going the distance as well.
For S&T,
Morgan Sikora (Highland, Ill./Highland) paced the Miners with four shots while
Cameryn Boucher (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) generated three shots, which included two on the WJC goal. A pair of seniors, midfielder
Taylor Vollmer (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) and
Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) contributed two shots apiece.
The win gives William Jewell a 5-4-1 overall mark as the Cardinals stand at 2-3-0 in the conference standings.
The Miners continue their current three-match conference home stand this Sunday (Sept. 30) as the Rockhurst Hawks pay visit to Rolla. A 12 p.m. (CT) start is scheduled for the matchup at the S&T Soccer Field.
