ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team carried a lead well into the second half Friday night, but ended up losing with under two minutes remaining in the second overtime period as William Jewell pulled out a 3-2 win over the Miners in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the S&T Soccer Field.
Blake Lines scored on a shot from the top of the box with just 1:49 remaining in the contest to win it for the Cardinals (3-5, 1-4 GLVC) in a game that the Miners (1-7, 1-4 GLVC) led for a majority of regulation time.
S&T took the initial lead in the 30
th minute of play when
Tyler Sivadon (Spring, TX/Concordia Lutheran) deflected a free kick from
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) past Cardinal goalkeeper Quinn Ruggeri, but William Jewell tied the score just moments later when Lines scored the first of his two goals on the evening.
Lines got the ball on the Miners' end of the field following a giveaway, then took it to the top of the box and fired in a shot to knot the game at one.
However, the Miners wasted little time in regaining the lead in a similar manner in which they got it in the first place, as another free kick by Ulfarsson was headed in by
Tim Schreffl (Rosenheim, Germany/Findsterwalder Gymnasium) only 90 seconds after the Lines goal.
The Miners had a huge edge in shots in the first half of 9-2 and carried that lead into the second half. S&T had a golden opportunity to add to it in the 64
th minute when
Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) got free but had his shot stopped by Ruggeri, then
Eric Ferenbach (Godfrey, IL/Alton) couldn't convert the rebound that would have extended the advantage.
William Jewell tied up the game in the 79
th minute when Noah Espinosa took advantage of another giveaway and got a goal off a short breakaway.
The Miners had a couple of opportunities in overtime, as Sivadon just missed the mark on a head ball off a free kick in the first extra period and
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) hit a shot just wide midway through the second overtime. Then after the clock wound under the two minute mark, Espinosa got the ball to Lines on a give-and-go and Lines hit a shot inside the far post to end the contest.
S&T had a 19-16 advantage in shots in a very physical contest, as the teams were whistled for a combined 57 fouls and eight cards were issued in the game. Sivadon had five shots attempts for S&T, while
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) finished with three saves in goal.
The Miners will finish their weekend homestand by hosting Rockhurst Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
