Springfield, Mo. – A goal by Missouri S&T's
Morgan Sikora (Highland, Ill./Highland) in the 84th minute of play proved to be the only score as the Miner women's soccer team claimed a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) victory over Drury this Sunday (Sept. 23) afternoon at DU's Harrison Stadium/Curry Sports Complex.
Sikora, a senior midfielder, tallied her team-leading third goal of this season unassisted from eight yards out in the middle of the field as her shot eluded Drury goalkeeper Sarah Franks at the 83:25 mark in the second half.
The opening 45 minutes of play featured a combined 10 shots with Drury attempting six of those as S&T sophomore goalkeeper
Kristin Steins (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) stopped all three Panther shots attempted on the Miners' goal.
Missouri S&T, which would register a 10-9 shots advantage for the match, reversed the momentum in the second half as the Miners would outshoot the Panthers by an 8-3 margin. A pair of second-half shots on goal by junior forward
Kayla Foster (Sand Springs, Okla./Charles Page) were saved by Sarah Franks, which included the second one at 83:22. However, a mere three seconds later
Morgan Sikora (Highland, Ill./Highland) was able to connect for what proved to be the game-winning tally as S&T improves its season record to 2-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in GLVC competition. Sikora, who totaled a match-most four shots in the contest, and Foster combined to account for seven of the Miners' 10 total shots. Senior midfielder
Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) along with junior defender-midfielder
Julia Crets (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North), and junior midfielder
Jess Haller (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) each posted a shot apiece with Haller's attempt being on the Panthers' net.
The Miners not only held the lead in shots, but would also record a 4-1 edge in corner kick tries.
Kristin Steins (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) earned the victory in net for the Miners as she made four saves in 90 minutes of action to even her record 2-2-0 on the season. Franks took the loss for Drury by allowing the contest's lone goal to go with a pair of saves in a complete-match effort.
Drury dropped to 0-7-1 overall and is now 0-4-0 in the GLVC following today's setback.
The Miners return home this Friday (Sept. 28) to host the William Jewell Cardinals in a 5 p.m. (CT) GLVC encounter at the S&T Soccer Field in Rolla, Mo. The tilt represents the first of a three-match conference home stand for Missouri S&T.
