SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Thanks to a pair of second half goals by
Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla), Missouri S&T's men's soccer team broke into the win column for the first time Sunday afternoon as it came away with a 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Drury at Harrison Stadium.
Parks broke a 1-1 tie in the 73
rd minute and scored again 11 minutes later to give S&T (1-6, 1-3 GLVC) the victory and a second straight win over their rivals to the southwest with a go-ahead tally in the second half.
The Miners got on the scoreboard first – giving S&T a lead in a game for the first time since the regular season began – when
Hunter Short (Rolla, MO/Rolla) headed in a feed from
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) in the ninth minute of play. However, the Panthers knotted the score in the 30
th minute of play after Alex Esquivel scored off a give-and-go from Jamie O'Brien.
With just under 20 minutes to go in regulation time, Parks got a lead pass and after eluding one defender, hit a shot that was stopped by Drury goalkeeper Nico Helin. But after the ball got loose behind Helin after his initial save, Parks beat him to the loose ball and shot it into an open net to put the Miners back into the lead.
Parks scored again with just over six minutes to go, as the Miners got a free kick near midfield and after the ball came loose following a challenge, it ended up at the feet of Parks and he fired it past Helin to extend the S&T advantage.
The Miners outshot the Panthers (0-7-1, 0-4 GLVC) by a 16-14 margin, but only three of the Panthers' shots were on goal as the S&T did a solid job in front of goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville). On the flip side, the Miners had 10 shots on net among their 16 shot attempts.
Missouri S&T will play its next three games at home, beginning with Friday's 7:30 p.m. contest against William Jewell.
