Women's Soccer Plays To Double Overtime Tie With Southern Indiana

Rolla, Mo. – The double-overtime streak for the Missouri S&T women's soccer team will continue for another season as a result of the Miners playing to a 0-0 tie against the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles this Friday (Sept. 21) night in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) match play at the S&T Soccer Field.

For Missouri S&T, the two overtime-period contests started in the 2011 campaign as the Miners have participated in a combined 15 such encounters since that time.  A season ago (Oct. 13), S&T and Maryville played to a scoreless double-overtime deadlock in Rolla.

With the tie, S&T is presently 1-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the GLVC this season.  Southern Indiana evens its conference record to 1-1-1 as the Screaming Eagles have compiled a 2-3-2 record overall for the 2018 campaign.

In regulation, the periods were tale of two halves as the Miners controlled play for the opening 45 minutes of action and outshot the Screaming Eagles by a 7-4 margin.  USI, which would post a 16-15 edge in shots for the match, countered in the second half as the Screaming Eagles outshot S&T, 9-5.  Each team would register a single shot in the first overtime frame and then two apiece in the second extra-period stanza.

In the first half, the Miners had a couple of opportune scoring opportunities as a pair of headers by senior midfielder Morgan Sikora (Highland, Ill./Highland) just missed the USI goal with one going wide left and the other wide right.  Senior goalkeeper Liz Carrano (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township), who would finish with five saves in 110 minutes between the posts, made four of those stops in second-half action with the final one coming in the 89th minute of regulation on a point blank shot by USI's Maggie Winter.  In the first overtime, Southern Indiana accounted for the lone shot on net while S&T did likewise in the second overtime period.  USI goalkeeper Emily Hopkins also turned in a complete-match performance and finished the contest with seven saves.

Morgan Sikora's (Highland, Ill./Highland) six shots in the match led all players while junior forward Kayla Foster (Sand Springs, Okla./Charles Page) and senior midfielder Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) each tallied three shots.  Sikora, Foster, and Mockenhaupt all generated two shots on goal while the senior midfielder Taylor Vollmer (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) accounted for the other Miners' shot on net.

Missouri S&T claimed a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, which featured a 4-1 advantage in the opening half of play.

The Miners will now travel to Springfield, Mo., this Sunday (Sept. 23) to take on the Drury Panthers in a GLVC match, which is set for a noon (CT) start time at DU's Harrison Stadium/Curry Sports Complex.
