Miners come up short against Southern Indiana

ROLLA, Mo. – Despite playing on relatively even terms on the stat sheet Friday night with Southern Indiana, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team ended up on the short end of the score as it lost to the Screaming Eagles 2-0 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at the S&T Soccer Field.

The Miners were even with the Screaming Eagles with 13 shots apiece and had four corner kicks against six for USI.  However, the only goals of the contest came from USI's Sean Rickey, who tallied one in each half to decide the game.

Rickey's first goal came on a free kick in the 15th minute shortly after the Miners – playing with the wind at their backs in the opening half – had missed the target on a couple of early scoring chances.  Rickey hit his direct free kick just inside the right post to put USI in front.

The Miners had a 9-4 advantage in shots in the first half, with the best opportunity coming late in the period when Mark Poindexter's (Raymore, MO/Raymore-Peculiar) head ball attempt was stopped by Eagle goalkeeper Justin Faas.

With just under 10 minutes remaining, USI (4-1-1, 2-0-1 GLVC) was awarded a penalty kick and S&T goalkeeper Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) stopped the attempt by Rickey, but the rebound came back in his direction and he scored to double the Eagles' lead.

Posey finished with four saves on the night for the Miners, who got a team-high four shot attempts from Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East).

Missouri S&T (0-6, 0-3 GLVC) will face Drury Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.   The Panthers dropped a 2-1 decision Friday at home to Maryville.
