Women's Soccer Drops A Close Season-Opening Match

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's soccer team put forth a solid performance in its 2018 season opener this Sunday (Sept. 2) afternoon, but unfortunately came up short as the Miners dropped 1-0 decision to Christian Brothers at S&T's Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Missouri S&T falls to 0-1-0 on the 2018 campaign as a result of the non-league setback while Christian Brothers improves its season overall record to 1-0-1.  The Lady Buccaneers opened their 2018 season this past Friday (Aug. 31) with a 2-2 overtime tie at Drury.

The match's only score occurred in the first half as CBU's Sinead Tierney scored her third goal of this season with an unassisted tally at 16:17 into the opening stanza.

The Miners had several scoring opportunities to net the equalizer throughout the match. A shot by junior forward Kayla Foster (Sand Springs, Okla./Charles Page) hit the crossbar of the Lady Buccaneers' goal less than two minutes after Tierney's goal and then just over a minute later Foster put a header on net which was saved by CBU goalkeeper Riley Chafin.

In the second half, S&T continued to apply offensive pressure on CBU as  the Miners placed six shots on the Lady Buccaneers' net of which Chafin stopped all of them.

S&T finished the contest with a 17-10 advantage in shots and a 10-6 edge in shots on goal.  The Miners had five individuals with multiple shot attempts, led by Kayla Foster's (Sand Springs, Okla./Charles Page) match-high six total.  Sophomore defender Cameryn Boucher (Chandler, Ariz./Basha), senior midfielder Morgan Sikora (Highland, Ill./Highland), junior midfielder Jess Haller (Eureka, Mo./Eureka), and senior midfielder Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) each totaled a pair of shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Steins (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) registered six saves for the Miners while Chafin stopped all 10 S&T shots in the contest.   Both teams compiled five corner kicks apiece in the competitive encounter, which featured a combined 23 fouls whistled.

The Miners are back in action this Friday, Sept. 7, as S&T battles the Emporia (Kan.) State Hornets in St. Charles, Mo.  A 2:30 p.m. (CT) start time is scheduled for the non-league match between the two teams at Harlen C. Hunter Stadium on the Lindenwood University campus.
