Knights blank Miners in GLVC men's soccer opener

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T struggled to find the net Friday night as it was shut out for the first time in the 2018 season, falling to Bellarmine 2-0 at the S&T Soccer Field in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.

The Knights got a pair of goals in the first half from Micah Linscott, one in the 13th minute off an assist from Tomas Bernedo and then an unassisted tally in the 21st minute to extend the Knights' lead.

On the first goal, Lincscott took a redirected ball from Bernedo and hit a shot by S&T goalkeeper Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville), then got a ball in the open field on the second goal after it went off the head of a Miner and scored on a short breakaway.

The Miners had a couple of good chances, the first coming in the opening minutes of the contest when Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) got a pass in front from Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) but hit the shot wide of the net.

In the 57th minute, the Miners got a free kick opportunity on the Bellarmine side of the field and Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) hit a shot that Knight goalkeeper Connor Range bobbled for a moment, but was able to keep the ball out of the net and keep S&T off the scoreboard.

Bellarmine (2-2, 1-0 GLVC) outshot the Miners (0-4, 0-1 GLVC) 21-4, with Posey ending the contest with six saves.

Missouri S&T returns to action Sunday when it faces Quincy in a 2:30 p.m. game in Quincy, Ill.  The Hawks played to a 2-2 tie at Rockhurst.
