ROLLA, Mo. – Following a short break in the schedule after a five-game opening weekend, Missouri S&T's softball team will get back on the field this week with a busy week of action – which will also include its home opener Tuesday afternoon.
Missouri S&T will face Lincoln in a doubleheader beginning at noon at the S&T Softball Field, then head to Nashville, Tenn., for the Music City Invitational where it will play six games over a three-day span. Most of S&T's weekend matchups will be against teams from the NCAA Division II Midwest Region, beginning with Friday's contest against Grand Valley State.
Heading into the week, the Lady Miners are 2-3 and have two regulars batting over the .300 mark in
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette) and Carley Hamman. Weiss is batting .417 on the year out of the leadoff spot and has already accumulated eight stolen bases, while Hamman hit .375 over S&T's first five games and drove in six runs in the win over Lincoln in Arkadelphia, Ark., during the opening weekend.
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) has two home runs and eight runs batted in to lead S&T in those categories. In the circle,
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) has a 2.17 earned run average, while
Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) has the other win and had two strong outings during the first weekend of action.
Lincoln enters Tuesday's twinbill seeking its first win of the season, as the Blue Tigers will come in with an 0-4 mark.
In Nashville, Missouri S&T will face Grand Valley State at 11 a.m. and Davenport at 1 p.m.; both teams will be playing their season openers against the Lady Miners. S&T will take on Kentucky Wesleyan (2-2) and tournament host Trevecca Nazarene (1-3) on Saturday before closing play on Sunday with games against Black Hills State (0-4) and Lindenwood. The Lions are scheduled to begin their season Wednesday and are slated to play three times in Nashville before facing the Lady Miners.
