Inside job: Miners dominate in paint to take down Blue Jays

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's inside game dominated matters Sunday afternoon as the Miners returned to action with a 71-47 victory over Westminster at Gibson Arena.

The combination of Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) combined for 37 points, 13 rebounds and eight of a school record-tying 12 blocked shots as the Miners built a 13-point lead in the opening quarter and never looked back to even their record at 4-4 prior to the resumption of their Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule later this week.

S&T never trailed in the game and closed the opening quarter on an 11-2 run to take that 13-point lead, as Kerr scored nine of those 11 points in that stretch.

The Miners outscored the Blue Jays (9-2) – who were playing Sunday's game as a discretionary exhibition – 13-2 over a four-minute stretch midway through the second quarter to break the contest wide open, extending the lead to 23 on a steal and lay-in by Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) with 3:13 to go in the half.

S&T shot 52.5 percent from the field in the first half and scored 34 of its 46 points in the paint during the first 20 minutes.

Kerr posted a career-high 23 points for the Miners and also pulled down nine rebounds as S&T held a one-board edge over the Blue Jays.  She also had four blocked shots as did Baylor, who finished with 14 points, while Kristin Steins (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) added three blocks as the Miners tied the single-game record of 12 blocks that had stood since 2008.

Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) also reached double figures with 11 points and led the Miners with five assists.

Kendahl Adams led Westminster with 15 points, who was held to 31.7 percent shooting from the floor.

Missouri S&T will return to GLVC action Thursday when it faces Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo., in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
