ROLLA, Mo. – A record-setting second quarter proved to be decisive for Missouri S&T's women's basketball team Tuesday afternoon, as the Miners closed their first semester schedule on a winning note with an 82-49 rout over Missouri Baptist on Education Day at Gibson Arena.
Entering the second period in a tied game, the Miners (3-4) outscored the Spartans (3-8) 38-11 during those next 10 minutes, posting the most points in a period since the NCAA went to the quarter format in women's basketball in the 2015-16 season. S&T had a pair of quarters last season with at least 30 points, including a high of 33 in a win over Rockhurst that was the previous best.
The outburst was buoyed by
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) and
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay), who both had career-high days in the victory. Raley boosted the Miners in the first half, as she scored 19 of her game-high 22 points in the first 20 minutes, while Baylor had a career-best 16 points and posted her second double-double of the season as she added 14 rebounds.
S&T led by three with 7:35 to play in the second quarter, but a lay-in by
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) sparked a 14-0 run that put the Miners in control of the contest.
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) followed the Durk basket with a three-pointer, then Raley scored five in a row on a lay-up and a three-pointer to give S&T a double-figure advantage for the first time.
The Miners closed the first half by outscoring the Spartans 13-2 over the final 3:38 to take the 27-point lead into the locker room, as they shot 62 percent from the field and made four-of-seven from three-point range in the first 20 minutes.
S&T's lead would eventually grow to as much as 46 at one point in the second half as it finished the day shooting 45.5 percent from the floor and holding the Spartans to a 32.8 percent mark.
All 10 Miners that played in the game scored, as Durk joined Raley and Baylor in the double figure category with 10 points. Baylor had three of S&T's seven blocked shots to go with her double-double, while
Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) and
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) had five assists apiece; S&T had assists on 22 of its 30 made field goals in the game.
Rose Wassef led Missouri Baptist – who was playing the game as an exhibition contest -- with 12 points and Megan Fassino added 11.
Missouri S&T returns to action following the NCAA winter break with a Dec. 30 contest against Westminster (Mo.) at 3 p.m. at Gibson Arena.
