Miners earn bid to Mineral Water Bowl for first post-season since 1950

Ticket Information for Mineral Water Bowl

ROLLA, Mo. – For the first time since 1950, Missouri S&T's football team will get an opportunity to play in a post-season game as the Miners have been selected to play in the Mineral Water Bowl on Dec. 1 in Excelsior Springs, Mo.

After being bypassed for a berth to the NCAA Division II playoffs, the Miners (9-2, 6-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference) will get to take part in the 53rd edition of the Mineral Water Bowl against Minnesota State Moorhead of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference at Tiger Stadium.  Kickoff will be at noon.

Missouri S&T reached the nine-win mark for just the fourth time in program history Saturday when it rallied for a 34-33 win over Truman State, extending its winning streak to five games in the process.  That helped earn S&T its first opportunity to play in the post-season since it won the 1950 Corn Bowl over Illinois State in Normal, Ill.

The Miners have averaged 32.5 points per game this season, the third-best mark in the GLVC and has the conference's second-best defense as it has allowed just 296.1 yards and 20.9 points per game.

The opponent for S&T in Excelsior Springs, MSU Moorhead, finished the regular season at 8-3 and 6-1 in the Northern Sun after capturing its final three games, including a 13-10 win over St. Cloud State Saturday to earn the NSIC's berth to the game.  The Dragons are also ending a lengthy drought in terms of post-season play, as they last played in a post-season contest in 1994.

While both programs will be playing in the Mineral Water Bowl for the first time, S&T head coach Tyler Fenwick has been a part of the game in the past as an assistant coach at Missouri Western.  In addition, prior to joining the staff at Missouri Western, Fenwick spent the 2006 season as the offensive coordinator at MSU Moorhead.

The bowl bid is the first that has been awarded to a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference since the league began sponsoring a football championship in 2012.
