ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T welcomes its alumni to campus for Homecoming this weekend and the William Jewell Cardinals to Allgood-Bailey Stadium Saturday for a Great Lakes Valley Conference game between two teams involved in close games a week ago. Game time is at 1 p.m.
The Miners fell in a one-possession contest to Indianapolis last week, as the Greyhounds broke a tie with a touchdown with 1:43 left to play. That setback dropped the Miners to 4-2 overall -- it was their first loss to an NCAA Division II opponent this year -- and 1-1 in the GLVC.
S&T's win came over Southwest Baptist two weeks ago, while the visiting Cardinals got their first win of the year at the expense of SBU last Saturday with a 14-10 win to move to 1-4 and 1-2 in GLVC play. Quarterback Will Schnieder scored on a 10-yard run with 4:39 left to provide the winning points for Jewell.
The Miners have won the last two meetings from the Cardinals, including a 27-17 win in Liberty last September.
ABOUT THE MINERS: Missouri S&T came up on the short end of the score in its showdown last week with 22nd-ranked Indianapolis, as the Greyhounds rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half to down the Miners 24-17 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. The Miners led 14-3 at halftime behind two rushing touchdowns by
Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central), but were outscored 21-3 in a second half plagued by weather delays.
A week after racking up 609 yards of offense in a win at Southwest Baptist, the Miners were held to 252 by the Greyhounds. Quarterbacks
Tyler Swart (Dickinson, TX/Dickinson) and
Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) combined to go 14-of-22 in the passing department for 182 yards, with
Justin Vaughn (Houston, TX/George Bush) catching seven of those passes for 62 yards.
Vaughn is among five Miners with at least 11 catches on the year, as his 20 receptions for 235 yards trail only those of
Braxton Graham (Seneca, MO/Seneca) – who leads the GLVC with 35 catches for 525 yards.
Josh Brown (Gainesville, FL/North Marion HS) has 17 receptions for 235 yards and
Logan Armontrout (Centralia, MO/Centralia) has hauled in 16 passes on the season.
Swart threw for 147 yards in Saturday's contest and has thrown for 1,332 on the season as he has connected on nearly 65 percent of his throws. He also ranks second in the GLVC with his 12 touchdown passes heading into play this week.
Jones has three of the Miners' five touchdown runs on the year and leads the team with 280 yards rushing, while
Aaron Moya (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) has rushed for 161 and
Payton McAlister (Decatur, TX/Decatur) has 102.
S&T's defense is paced by
Bo Brooks (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) with 47 tackles on the year and a team-high 10 tackles for a loss, while linebacker
Landon Compton (Lamar, MO/Lamar) has been in on 45 stops and
Justin Onwugbufor (Maize, KS/Northwest) has made 32.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS: William Jewell secured its first victory of the 2018 campaign last week, as it rallied from a 10-7 deficit in the fourth quarter for a 14-10 win over Southwest Baptist in Liberty, Mo. Quarterback Will Schneider engineered the game-winning 76-yard drive and finished it off with a 10-yard scoring run with 4:39 to play.
Much of the Cardinal offense runs through Schneider, as he leads the team with 258 yards rushing and has thrown for another 901 with three scoring passes. In the win over SBU, Schneider – who has completed just under 48 percent of his passes this season -- accounted for 209 yards of offense with 149 passes and another 60 on the ground.
In the passing game, his top target has been Bulla Graft with 16 receptions for 189 yards and two touchdowns, while TJ Guillory has caught 12 balls for 130 yards and Keelon Vann has made 10 catches for 124 yards. The top rusher after Schneider is Rye'll Dydell with 113 yards, while Graft has 105 yards on the ground.
Defensively, the Cardinals are led by linebacker Brock Geisz with 40 tackles on the season, while Thaddeus Glenn has made 36 tackles and Antonio Wabanimkee has made 33 from his linebacker spot. Wabanimkee, the reigining defensive player of the week in the GLVC, has recorded two of Jewell's five quarterback sacks and Donte Colum has three interceptions.
WIlliam Jewell has played one of the most difficult slates in NCAA Division II this season, a schedule that has included games thus far against defending Division II champion Texas A&M-Commerce and current GLVC frontrunner Indianapolis.
