S&T Volleyball To Close Regular Season at William Jewell and Rockhurst

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's volleyball team will close out its regular season this weekend (Nov. 2-3) with a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) road matches.  The Miners begin the week's action this Friday (Nov. 2) taking on the William Jewell Cardinals in a 7 p.m. (CT) contest at WJC's Mabee Center in Liberty, Mo.  S&T then wraps up the 2018 regular season Saturday (Nov. 3) versus the Rockhurst Hawks in Kansas City, Mo., with opening serve slated for  3 p.m. (CT) at RU's Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse.

2018 Record: Missouri S&T is presently 15-13 overall and 7-9 in the GLVC this season after claiming a 3-0 league win over Quincy this last Saturday (Oct. 27) in its home regular-season finale match at Gibson Arena in Rolla, Mo.  The Miners, who are 4-6 on the road, 5-4 at home, and 6-3 at neutral sites to date this campaign, dropped a 3-2 conference home decision to Truman State this past Friday (Oct. 26) in their annual Dig Pink Match. 

S&T Head Coach – Andy Halaz (Rockhurst, 2008), 1st season, 15-13 (.536).  Halaz is presently in his first season at S&T and began his current duties on Jan. 28 after serving as the director of marketing and was the outdoor director for High Performance STL Volleyball Club in St. Louis, Mo., since 2014.  He coached one of the High Performance STL Volleyball Club's top teams while organizing the outdoor training program.  Halaz was the lead court trainer and summer camp coordinator at Georgetown from 2009-14 after spending two seasons (2008 and 2009) at Saint Louis where he was an assistant coach and the director of volleyball operations.  During his time at SLU, the Billikens won at least a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season championship and were NCAA Division I Tournament participants, including making a second-round appearance in 2008.  Halaz also served as an assistant coach at Rockhurst for four seasons (2004-07) and helped the Hawks to four consecutive NCAA Division II Tourney appearances.

     *William Jewell: The Cardinals are 11-19 overall and 5-11 in the GLVC this season to date after extending their winning streak to three with a 3-2 conference victory at Missouri-St. Louis this last Saturday (Oct. 27).  WJC, which is directed by fifth-year head coach Carolyn Raynes, posted a pair of 3-1 league road victories over Quincy (Ill.) last Tuesday (Oct. 23) and Maryville last Friday (Oct. 26) in St. Louis, Mo.  The Cardinals are 2-6 at home, 3-7 on the road, and 6-6 in neutral site matches this season.  WJC visits nationally-ranked Drury this Tuesday (Oct. 30) in a GLVC contest at Springfield, Mo., before concluding its season Friday (Nov. 2) hosting Missouri S&T in league play.  The Cardinals suffered a 3-1 road loss to the Miners earlier this season (9/8) in Rolla.  WJC accumulated a 10-21 overall record and went 4-14 in the GLVC for the 2017 campaign.  All-Time Series – S&T leads 13-0 -- 7-0 Home, 6-0 Away, 0-0 Neutral; Last Meeting - L 3-0 (9/8/18 at Missouri S&T).
     *Rockhurst: The Hawks, who are among teams receiving votes in the latest (Oct. 29) American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll, are 24-6 overall and 12-4 in the GLVC to date this season.  RU, under 30th-year head coach Tracy Rietzke, posted a 2-1 mark in conference action this past week as the Hawks started with a 3-0 road triumph over Truman State this last Tuesday (Oct. 23) in Kirksville, Mo.  Rockhurst then dropped a 3-1 decision at Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) last Friday (Oct. 26) before registering a 3-0 victory over Maryville last Saturday (Oct. 27) in St. Louis, Mo., to conclude the weekend.  The Hawks, who are 13-1 at home, 6-4 on the road, and 5-1 at neutral sites this fall, finish out the regular season with a three-match home stand this week.  RU faces Ottawa (Kan.) this Tuesday (Oct. 30) in a non-league tilt before resuming GLVC play Friday (Nov. 2) against nationally-ranked Drury and then squaring off against Missouri S&T Saturday (Nov. 3) in its final regular-season contest.  The Hawks earned a 3-0 conference-opening road win over Missouri S&T earlier this season (9/7) in Rolla.  Last season, Rockhurst accumulated a 32-8 overall record and generated a 14-4 GLVC mark.

All-Time Record: The 2018 campaign represents S&T's 12th season of intercollegiate women's volleyball competition since the program's inception in 2007.  The Miners have accumulated a 168-216 record (.438) to date.  S&T has produced three 20 or more victories in a season – 24-10 in 2011, 22-11 in 2015, and 20-13 in 2012.  
  
Regular Season Finales: The Miners are 11-11 (.500) in their last two regular-season finale matches dating back to the 2007 season.  S&T is 6-5 (.545) in its final regular-season appearance since 2007 and has won six of its last seven such encounters.  The Miners sport a combined 5-4 record (.556) in its final two regular-season outings which is away and is 3-2 (.600) in its last regular-season match held on the road.  A season ago, S&T suffered a 3-1 setback at Truman State (11/10) before bouncing back to notch a 3-2 road win over William Jewell (11/11). 

Miner Notes: Senior outside hitter Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic), who has amassed 1,233 career kills in 110 matches, is presently 10 kills shy of moving into a second-place tie with Erin Bekebrede (1,243 kills; 2008-11) for second place among S&T all-time leaders ... Junior defensive specialist-libero Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) has compiled double-digit digs in 27 of her 28 matches played in this season, which features 11 outings with 20 or more digs highighted by 30 apiece in back-to-back GLVC tilts against William Jewell (9/8) and at Missouri-St. Louis (9/14) ... Junior outside hitter Emilee Schlader's (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) current team-leading 372 kills in 26 matches this fall is one shy of matching Krita Haslag's fourth-place 373 kills set in the 2015 campaign among S&T's all-time single-season bests ... Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) is 66 points shy of equaling Erin Bekebrede's second-place 1,443.0 career points total on the Miners' career points leaders list ... S&T's top two kills leaders this season, Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) (372 kills) and Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) (337 kills) have combined to account for 52.9 percent (709-1,341) of the squad's output to date this season .  The two have each attained double-figure kills in 23 matches this season ... Senior middle hitter Carson Talley's (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) 175 career total blocks in 76 matches is three away from tying Julie Meyer (178 total blocks; 2008-09) for sixth place among the Miners' all-time leaders while her 27 career solo blocks equals Julie Meyer for sixth place on the program's career leaders list ... Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne), who has compiled a program all-time second-most 1,352 career digs in 80 outings, has totaled a career season-most 526 digs in 28 contests this fall which eclipses her 458 digs in 31 2017 season appearances.       
         
2018 GLVC Volleyball Preseason Poll: S&T was picked 12th in the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Coaches Preseason Poll as the Miners received 55 points.  Lewis was chosen as the conference's preseason favorite with 180 points and 11 first-place votes.  Rockhurst picked up the other three first-place votes to go with a second-most 171 points.  Rounding out the top five were Illinois Springfield (149 pts.), McKendree (128 pts.), and Bellarmine (125 pts.).  Truman State (121 pts.) placed sixth proceeded by Missouri-St. Louis (115 pts.), and Indianapolis (105 pts.).  Drury (99 pts.) and Southern Indiana (72 pts.) garnered ninth and 10th place, respectively.  Quincy (62 pts.) finished in 11th place while Missouri S&T was 12th.  The final two placings in the 14-team league poll were occupied by William Jewell (48 pts.) and Maryville (26 pts.).

2018 S&T Roster: Missouri S&T's 2018 active roster consists of three seniors, four juniors and sophomores apiece, and five freshmen.  Six of the 16 student-athletes play either the outside or right-side hitter position while four others are middle hitters, three setters, two defensive specialists, and one libero.  Eight individuals hail from the state of Missouri and two from Kansas.  Serving as S&T's captains for the 2018 season are Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) and Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston).  
 
2017 Record: S&T concluded the 2017 season with a 10-21 overall record, which included a fifth-place 3-15 GLVC West Division mark.
