Miner Women's Soccer Edged By Lewis

Romeoville, Ill. - The Missouri S&T women's soccer team played well in all phases of this Friday (Oct. 19) evening's match versus Lewis but couldn't get a score as the Miners dropped a 1-0 decision to the Flyers in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play at Lewis Stadium.

Missouri S&T, which entered the match seeking its second consecutive GLVC win, totaled six shots on goal for the match to Lewis' five.  But, the outcome was decided by one score which came from the Flyers in the opening 45 minutes of play.  Lewis' Karlie Cummins tallied her third goal of the year on a header off Mallory Richardson's corner kick at 18:38 of the first half in what would represent the only ball to get past S&T senior goalkeeper Liz Carrano (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township), who made four saves in 90 minutes between the posts.

S&T would get two scoring opportunities late in the match as senior defender Carli Tastad (Millstadt, Ill./Belleville West) put the ball on goal in the 85th minute and junior forward Kayla Foster (Sand Springs, Okla./Charles Page) did as well with only 45 seconds to go but both attempts were foiled by the Lewis goalkeeper.

The Miners, who are 4-9-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the GLVC, will visit Indianapolis this Sunday (Oct. 21) for a 12 p.m. (ET) league match at UIndy's Key Stadium.

Lewis managed to outshoot S&T 13-12 for the match although the Miners controlled the action offensively in the second half with 10 shots to the Flyers' five.  In the first half, Lewis held the upper hand with eight shots to S&T's two.  Lewis would claim the advantage in corner kicks by a 5-2 count.

Goalkeeper Lucy Clark of Lewis notched the shutout victory with a six save  performances as the Flyers up their season record to 9-4-2 overall and 8-3-0 in the GLVC.

Junior midfielder Jess Haller (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) and senior midfielder Mikaela Mockenhaupt (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) each had two shots on goal to lead the Miners.  Haller, Mockenhaupt, and Foster all recorded a team-high three shots.
