ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Missouri S&T fell behind early in the contest Friday night and would up on the losing end of a 4-2 decision at the hands of Lewis in Great Lakes Valley Conference play as it opened a three-game stretch away from home.
S&T (3-11, 3-8 GLVC) fell behind six minutes into the game when Konrad Malinowski scored the first of his two goals in the opening half, as he redirected a corner kick into the back of the net.
Malinowski's second goal, which was scored in the 16
th minute, came following a bad pass by the Miners to the back line that he got to and beat S&T goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville), who came out to challenge the play, to make it 2-0 in favor of the Flyers (4-8-3, 3-7-1 GLVC).
The Miners cut the lead in half with just under seven minutes remaining in the opening half, as
Mark Poindexter's (Raymore, MO/Raymore-Peculiar) shot went off the foot of a Lewis defender and right to
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik), who was coming down the opposite side of the field and hit the shot into an open net.
S&T had a good scoring chance in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but
Alejandro Chavarri's (Sevilla, Spain/Santa Joaquina de Vedruna) shot to the lower right corner was turned away by Lewis goalkeeper Edgar Avila. About a minute later, the Flyers added to their lead when Avila played a ball down the field and it eventually ended up on the foot of Jesus Ochoa, who chipped it in over the head of Posey.
Lewis got another goal on a penalty kick, scored by John Horstman, in the 67
th minute, before the Miners tallied a goal late in the contest, as
Cade Johnstone (Wasilla, AK/Mat-Su Career & Technical) posted his first career goal with just over a minute to play off an assist from
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik). The assist was the 21st of Ulfarsson's career, tying him with Mike Balassi for the most ever in the history of the S&T program.
The Flyers outshot the Miners 17-12 for the game; Posey finished with seven saves in goal for S&T, who will continue their three-game road swing to close the regular season Sunday when they play at Indianapolis in a 2:30 p.m. (Eastern time) contest.
