ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T will look to stay on the heels of the leaders in the Great Lakes Valley Conference football race as it heads to Quincy, Ill., to face Quincy University Saturday night in a 5 p.m. contest.
The Miners routed William Jewell 59-21 Saturday to improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC; S&T is one game in back of Indianapolis and Truman State in the loss column in the standings as play commences this weekend. S&T had arguably its best one-half performance of the 2018 season in the win over the Cardinals, racking up 432 of its 565 total yards in the first 30 minutes of play to build a decisive lead.
Quincy enters the game at 2-5 overall and is 1-2 in the GLVC following its 35-7 loss to Indianapolis on Saturday.

Tyler Swart (Dickinson, TX/Dickinson) completed 16-of-21 passes for 353 yards and three touchdowns to help him earn his third GLVC player of the week award this year.
Swart's 353 yards all came in the first two quarters to set a new GLVC record for passing yards in a half – it was the third-best half in S&T history – and enters play Saturday with 1,685 passing yards on the season. He has completed 66.1 percent of his passes for 15 touchdowns, seven of which have gone to
Braxton Graham (Seneca, MO/Seneca), who leads the Miner receivers with a league-high 37 receptions for 598 yards.
Justin Vaughn (Houston, TX/George Bush) has made 22 receptions on the year for 310 yards, while
Logan Armontrout (Centralia, MO/Centralia) has hauled in 21 balls and
Josh Brown (Gainesville, FL/North Marion HS) has 19 catches.
Meanwhile,
Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) recorded the 12
th 100-yard rushing game of his Miner career Saturday as he ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns that included a 51-yard scoring dash. Jones has 400 yards rushing to lead the Miners, who are averaging 111.7 rushing yards per game as a team.
On the flip side, the Miner defense leads the GLVC in rushing defense as it has allowed just 100.1 yards per contest and is second in total defense, allowing just 301.4 yards a game. The unit is paced by linebackers
Landon Compton (Lamar, MO/Lamar) with 51 tackles on the season and
Bo Brooks (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo), who has been in on 50 stops.
Brooks leads the Miners with 10.5 tackles for a loss and is tied for the team lead in sacks with
Tershawn Wharton (University City, MO/University City) with five apiece; Wharton has made 9.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Roderick Chapman (Los Angeles, CA/Jefferson) also earned GLVC player of the week honors on special teams as he is averaging 29.7 yards per kickoff return and 14.9 yards on punt returns this season. Chapman also has a league-high four interceptions and 12 passes defended on the season.
Also on special teams, placekicker
Ben Styron (Harrisonville, MO/Harrisonville) broke the S&T career record for points by a placekicker as he now has 201 in a Miner uniform, while also tying the school record with his 33
rd career field goal.
ABOUT THE HAWKS: Quincy brings records of 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the GLVC into Saturday's contest following a 35-7 home loss Saturday to league leader Indianapolis. The Hawks were tied with the Greyhounds following a touchdown by quarterback Andrew Rund late in the first quarter, but allowed 483 yards of total offense in the game that included 271 yards on the ground.
Rund completed 11-of-19 passes in Saturday's contest for 113 yards, a week after throwing for 174 in QU's victory at Lincoln. He has completed 54.5 percent of his throws for 382 yards on the year, while Tionne Harris has also seen substantial playing time at the position and has thrown for 618 yards and three scores.
Jordan Smith leads the Hawks with 19 receptions for 197 yards, while Shane Barrett has a team-high 238 yards on his 11 receptions this season. Chris Brinson leads Quincy in rushing with 342 yards but has not played in the last two games; Harris has rushed for 279 yards and Theo Hopkins, who has had the bulk of the carries recently, has 241.
Linebacker Cody Leonard leads the GLVC with 102 tackles on the season and on Saturday broke the Quincy school record for solo tackles with 189 in his career. Leonard also paces the Hawks in sacks with 3.5 and tackles for a loss with ll. Clayton Cole has been in on 43 stops and safety Keenan Stegall has made 41 tackles.
