S&T Volleyball Victorious in Second Straight Five-Set Contest

Indianapolis, Ind. – For its second consecutive Midwest Region Crossover match, the Missouri S&T women's volleyball team had to go the distance as the Miners played all five sets before disposing of Ursuline, 3-2 (25-21, 25-15, 21-25, 19-25, 15-5) this Saturday (Oct. 13) morning at The Academy Volleyball Club.

Missouri S&T, which evened its 2018 Midwest Region Crossover record to 1-1 as a result of the win, opened tournament action Friday (Oct. 12) on the short end of a 3-2 decision to Lake Erie.  The Miners will go for their second victory in a row later today versus the Northern Michigan Wildcats in what represents S&T's final appearance in the weekend tourney.

The Miners, who are now 13-9 overall and 6-2 in neutral site matchups this season, won for the third time in their last four outings as S&T held on to win the deciding fifth set by a double-digit margin after prevailing in the match's opening two sets.

S&T played well offensively as three Miners notched double figures in kills with senior outside hitter Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) tallying a match-high 18 total.  S&T, which posted a .234 hitting percentage for the contest, also received 13 kills from sophomore right-side hitter Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) while freshman right-side-middle hitter Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) hammered 10 kills.  Freshman middle hitter Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) put down six kills and hit at a .545 clip while senior middle hitter Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) also turned in a productive performance with a .429 hitting percentage as a result of six kills in 14 hitting attempts.  Senior right-side hitter Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) also provided six kills to account for S&T's 59 team total. Redshirt sophomore setter Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) distributed 29 assists to pace three Miners with double-digit assists totals.

The statistical leader on the defensive side for S&T was junior defensive specialist-libero Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne), who dug out a match-leading 27 balls. She was joined in double-figures by Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic), who garnered 18 digs.  In blocking, Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) generated three block solos to go with an block assist and Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) contributed three block assists.

Ursuline, which falls to 8-11 overall on the season, finished the match hitting .165 and accumulated 53 team kills.  Angela Zamora had 14 kills to lead the Arrows and Nora Clink supplied 11.  Defensively, Kassidy Stilwell's 19 digs paced three UC players with double-digit totals.

Set 1: S&T 25 – UC 21
S&T opened the first set scoring four unanswered points and opened its margin up to eight points at 17-9.  The Arrows put together a late run to get within three points (24-21), but the Miners held set point and a kill by S&T's Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) ended the set.

Set 2: S&T 25 – UC 15
For the second straight set, the Miners seized the lead to start with a 10-3 scoring spurt and were able to maintain its advantage the rest of the way.  S&T, which recorded a match set-high .406 hitting percentage, increased its lead to eight points at 20-12 following an Arrows' attack error.  The Miners then netted five of the next eight points to win the set and go ahead 2-0 in the match.

Set 3: UC 25 – S&T 21
Ursuline recovered in set three as the Arrows came out on a 5-0 run and built their lead up to eight points at 17-9.  S&T was able to fight back by going on a 12-6 scoring run and close to within 23-21 per a Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic)' kill, but any hopes of sweeping the match were extinguished as UC would produce back-to-back kills for the set-winning points.

Set 4: UC 25 – S&T 19
A 6-1 Ursuline start commenced the fourth set, but S&T erased its deficit to pull into a nine-all tie.  The Miners took a brief 11-10 lead before the Arrows proceeded to go on an 8-3 run and lead 18-14.  S&T trimmed UC's advantage to 20-18 following a Miners' timeout before the Arrows accounted for the five of the set's final six points to send the match to a fifth set.

Set 5: S&T 15 – UC 5
The Miners controlled play in the deciding set, taking a 6-3 lead and then increasing its advantage to seven points at 11-4 after a Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) kill.  S&T, which compiled a .400 hitting percentage in the set on seven kills in 15 hitting chances, would go on to score four unanswered points after holding an 11-5 advantage as consecutive attack miscues by the Arrows resulted in the Miner victory.
