LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Missouri S&T was able to slow down one of the top field goal shooting teams in NCAA Division II through a good portion of the first half Saturday afternoon, but Bellarmine began to warm up just as the Miners went ice cold and the sixth-ranked Knights went to record an 85-50 Great Lakes Valley Conference win at Knights Hall.
The Knights (18-1, 8-1 GLVC) entered the game ranked second in Division II in field goal percentage at 53 percent, but made only three of their first 14 shots from the field – including nine straight misses in one stretch – as the Miners were able to take an 11-9 lead with just over eight minutes gone in the opening half.
S&T (2-15, 0-9 GLVC) took that two-point lead on a
Chris Harris (Antioch, IL/Lake Forest Academy) three-point basket, but didn't score again for over five minutes as the Knights went on a 13-0 run to move in front.
The Miners did get back to within six on a pair of baskets by
Romain Louiserre (La Ferte Alais, France/Fredrick Fays) and later was within eight following a trey by Harris with 5:18 to go in the half, but S&T did not score again in the period following the Harris three-pointer. Bellarmine closed the first half on a 16-0 run to take a 43-19 lead to the break.
S&T shot just 19.4 percent in the first half, one of which was heavy on three-point attempts as the Miners took 25 of their 36 shots from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Bellarmine made 14 of its final 22 field goal attempts in the first half while taking control of matters.
The Knights continued to add to their lead over the final 20 minutes, as they finished the contest at 48.5 percent from the field.
Louiserre recorded his fifth double-double in the Miners' last eight games with a team-high 15 points and 14 rebounds for S&T, while Harris also reached double figures with 12 points. The Miners made only 24.6 percent of their shots for the game and ended the contest with 42 three-point attempts, one short of the school's single game record.
Alex Cook had 16 points to lead four Knights in double figures, but the Miners did hold Adam Eberhard, Bellarmine's leading scorer on the season, scoreless in 19 minutes of action. Saturday's win extended the Knights' home winning streak to 54 games, the longest current streak in NCAA Division II.
The Miners wrap up their three-game road swing Thursday when they play at Quincy in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
